The Palace of the Grand Master of Rhodes (also known as Kastello) is the most striking landmark in the historic center of Rhodes City. The imposing, fortress-like structure crowns the highest point of the medieval old town at the end of the famous Street of the Knights (Odos Ippoton). History & Architecture Origin & Knights' Era: The complex was originally built in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller on the foundations of a 7th-century Byzantine citadel. It served as the residence of the Grand Master and as an impregnable administrative center. Destruction & Reconstruction: After the Ottoman conquest in 1522, the building lost its importance and was almost completely destroyed in 1856 by a devastating ammunition explosion. The palace owes its magnificent present-day appearance to a comprehensive reconstruction by the Italians between 1937 and 1940. They rebuilt it in a neo-Gothic pseudo-medieval style as a summer residence for King Victor Emmanuel III and Benito Mussolinni.

The Mandraki Marina & Harbour is the most famous historic harbour of the city of Rhodes. According to tradition, the ancient Colossus of Rhodes stood near the harbour entrance. Emblems: At the harbour entrance, the bronze statues Elefanti and Elafina (deer and doe), the present-day symbols of the island, stand on two columns. Sights: On the pier stand three historic medieval windmills as well as Fort St. Nicholas at the harbour tip. Use: Today, the harbour serves as a mooring for excursion boats, yachts, and fishing boats.
