Foix–Saint-Girons Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very scenic, but overall a poor surface.
Too bad, with a better surface the Bahntrassenradweg would have a lot of potential.

V81 Greenway Tunnels (Saint-Girons – Foix)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The V81 is particularly pleasant, and particularly between Saint-Girons and Foix where it is often shaded, its tunnels are lit as hikers pass. And although it can sometimes be very close to the road, neighboring road traffic is easily overlooked.
The advantage of these greenways is also to have a low slope.

Saint-Girons, Castelnau-Durban, La Bastide-de Sérou, are worth a detour and a stopover, like many other places, in particular the site of Labouiche and its underground river.

The greenway leads to Vernajoul and arrangements have been made in part to reach Foix.

The departure after Saint-Girons is very poorly indicated, you have to take the exit of the city and the last roundabout in the direction of the Travelers' area (or what remains of it) to find this departure which is superb, shaded between two retaining walls covered with greenery.

We must salute the commitment of local authorities in these developments, we must use these routes, and talk about them to show that these investments have their usefulness, if only to revitalize, thanks to ecotourism, the economy of neglected municipalities. by new roads.

If you do not know the site, AFV3, Association for the development of Véloroutes et des Voies Vertes, maintains a map of French greenways:

Pass too little known in the center of the city of Foix. A magnificent landscape over the city as well as the whole Ariege plain.

Good to travel Pyrenean pass, a must for every cycling enthusiast and Tour de France Fun. Easier long climb from Foix, but short and steep from Massat direction.

Foix Castle

Highlight • Castle

Overlooking the city, Foix Castle is a marvel. It perfectly illustrates what a medieval fortified castle is. Don't miss a visit to its arms and armor room. It is very impressive. A stroll along its rampart walk is also worthwhile.

A steep path leads up to the multi-towered castle, which originally dates back to the 10th century.

The greenway from St-Giron to Foix (which I always did in the direction Foix to St-Giron) is the most beautiful part of the greenway which in total goes to (almost) Boussens. It is a slightly hilly section with the most beautiful landscapes!

Hello everyone, I'm from Ariège, I decided this year to do the greenway with my dog Emy in both directions. It's a very beautiful walk, however there are some black points: lack of stone benches to deter potential thieves, and on the other hand the large Rimont tunnel which is 803 m long there is no more light. The motion detector does not work. Luckily that day I had my flashlight with me. There is horse excrement everywhere, perhaps one day we will have to ask the riders to pick up their droppings. It's a very beautiful walk.

A real nice stretch of the Voie Verte from Fox to St Girons. As these are old railway tracks converted into cycling path the descend and climbs are even and easy. A few tunnels in this part, but the two longest ones in near Rimont are mostly dry and well lite. One of my favorite routes in this area.
