This magnificent little village is located on a height. The brick terraces of the southern part of the city overlook the Pyrenees and offer splendid sunsets. Carla-Bayle owes its name to the French philosopher Pierre Bayle, born in the village in 1647. He was a scholar and a thinker mixing skepticism and rationalism. He is the author of the famous historical and critical dictionary of 1697 which announces the spirit of the Enlightenment. So much so that encyclopaedists will hail Bayle as one of their inspirations. Here is one of his famous quotes: "The more we study man, the more we know that pride is his dominant passion, and that it affects greatness even in the saddest misery."
