The air well of Trans-en-Provence (Puits aérien) is an unusual technical structure in the Var department of southern France. It was built in 1931 by the Belgian engineer Achille Knapen to extract drinking water from the humidity in the air. The approximately 13-meter-high, dome-shaped stone building resembles a giant beehive and has numerous openings for air circulation. Through cooling at night, water vapor was intended to condense inside and be collected in a basin. However, the experiment yielded only very small amounts of water because the temperature differences were not sufficient. Since 1983, the air well has been a listed monument and is considered today a remarkable testament to early attempts to extract water from the air.

The bright white quartz vein is not spectacular and might not be worth a longer hike on its own. But since the entire hiking trail up here is pretty and varied, that doesn't matter much. And the white rocks are, of course, a nice curiosity.

Beautiful climb, not too difficult and beautiful views

A surprising little corner. In one direction, you emerge from the undergrowth to land in a meadow marked by the presence of a small house that surprises by its presence, then just after you have to cross a branch of the Aille that is more or less dry. Be careful on this passage in summer; you have to aim carefully for the slabs to avoid the sandbanks.

The structure is not an air conditioning system - rather, it was designed to condense the humidity with the help of the large concrete core - but this did not achieve the desired result.
