Nivernais Canal

Highlight • Other

The Nivernais canal is the least used of the four canals running through Burgundy. It connects the Loire river to the Yonne river near Auxerre, via a 196 kilometer route. It was abandoned at the end of the seventies and was recently rehabilitated. Its route is very quiet and crosses a relatively unknown microregion.

With this guest room at the Gites de France we have found exactly what we were looking for! A hospitable house, a pool and good food. Reserved by phone we were lucky to get the one room. There is space for up to four people.
Francoise Aurousseau immediately offered us something to drink! Then swim in the pool!
When we asked if there was something to eat in Charrin, she just made a sad face, and so did we. But of course she can help us: salad from the garden, pâté de porc (wild boar and our own meat) and omelets with pasta from our own chickens. In addition, a bottle of Beaujolais, a Tomme and ice cream for dessert. Everything simple and delicious!
Children and grandchildren run the farm. Charolais cattle and pigs that live permanently in the open on six hectares of pasture. The EU makes it possible with financial project support for the production of sausage and pate on the farm and direct marketing.
Strict vegetarians and vegans have more difficulties here, we enjoyed it.

The cycle path on the dam is sometimes a bit "tough". The views of the Loire radiate tranquility.

The city lies on the river Loire, directly at the confluence of the right tributary Aron. The Canal du Nivernais, which has overcome the Morvan mountains starting from Auxerre, also flows directly next to it. After crossing the Loire, which is navigable here for about two kilometers, watercraft find a connection to the Canal latéral à la Loire (Wikipedia), which runs south of the Loire.
