Plans to redevelop the nearby Schönefeld Airport have existed since the 1960s. Although the location was the worst-performing site, BER was built there anyway. Groundbreaking took place in 2006, and the planned opening was scheduled for 2011! The well-known structural defects caused years of delays, and mismanagement took another nine years to complete the airport!
