En 1341, Édouard III d’Angleterre érigea la terre du Cubzaguais en châtellenie et la donna à Bérard III d’Albret, en raison de services rendus. Les guerres de religion ont sévi dans cette zone. Au cours de la période de la Convention nationale (1792-1795), la commune a adopté le nom révolutionnaire de Montalon.
