Peace. It resides in this place, the Sainte Marguerite d'Epfig chapel, a Romanesque jewel in its peaceful green setting: medieval-inspired garden, centuries-old yew trees... A haven. Elements of medieval and Renaissance frescoes are still visible. The building houses an ossuary associated with sinister episodes in history: here rest in peace the remains of hundreds of victims of the Peasants' War of 1525 and the Thirty Years' War. The chapel, erected in 1025, will celebrate its millennium on July 30th.

About 25 kilometers south of Strasbourg lies Erstein—also known as the sugar town of Alsace. Anyone who drinks a cappuccino or coffee here or elsewhere will usually be handed a packet of sugar from Erstein. No wonder, since the small town is home to one of the most famous sugar factories in the region. The municipality of Erstein is part of the large natural region of the central Ried in Alsace, and in particular, the Ried der Ill around the city center.
