Château de Fallavier

Highlight • Castle

Fallavier Castle is in the parish of St Quentin Fallavier. Built on the western part of the Relong hill (344m), it rises above the villages of St Quentin, la Verpillière and Villefontaine. The site bears witness to more than 1000 years of history.
This strategic location was exploited during the war between the Savoy and the Dauphiné (1250-1355). A document dated from 1280 indicates the construction work to extend and fortify the castle.
The castle forms a real fortress consisting of two walls and a mighty keep. While more emphasis was placed on the defensive aspect, convenience was not left aside. There are a total of 3 rooms, a kitchen, a fountain, a large hall and a chapel. After France acquired the building (in the second half of the 14th century), the owners with honorable names changed several times.
The castle fell into disrepair before the 17th century. Century. It was not until 1969 that the owner, Mr. Mérard, made the decision to rebuild the castle and bring the site to life.
The castle has been owned by the municipality since 1992. St-Quentin-Fallavier strives to evaluate and discover one of the most important landmarks of the local cultural heritage.

On September 19, 1846, the Virgin appeared to two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, in La Salette, in Isère. The cult of Notre-Dame de la Salette then spread rapidly across the Dauphiné. The chapel of Veyssilieu was built at the top of the "mountain of Chatelan" in 1866, following a wish from the parish priest who promised the Virgin to build a chapel for her if she protected her parishioners from cholera. The modest building was blessed in 1867. On this occasion, the group sculpted in polychrome plaster, placed in the niche above the altar, was transported with great pomp.

The Bienassis fortified house, built by the Vallin family at the end of the 14th century, was organized around an enclosed courtyard and included a pavilion surrounded by watchtower turrets. The current building was completed in 1897 for Casimir Gournet, who wanted to give the old feudal residence the appearance of a medieval castle. Alphonse de Lamartine made several stays in Bienassis with his friend Nicolas Prosper Guichard, between 1804 and 1808. The castle, built of limestone rubble, consists of an L-shaped building covered with a long-pitched roof covered with mechanical tiles extended to the south by a high quadrangular tower with a porch in the work. The north wing has four levels of elevation: three cellars on the basement floor, a square floor and an attic floor. The tower rises on three levels: a ground floor with ribbed vaults and two square floors, the buildings are crowned with false machicolation. The corner turrets are covered with conical slate roofs. The stained glass windows of the ground floor living room are decorated with two bust-length women and two bust-length men in rondels. The coat of arms of the Joubert de Montlevon family can be found on one of the windows of the first living room on the ground floor. In the library, two shields with scrolling scroll motifs, a shield decorated with three female heads, a shield decorated with a passing griffin, and a shield decorated with two hammers with the initials C G for Casimir Gournet adorn the windows. On one of the high points of the hill of L'Isle d'Abeau, on the northern edge overlooking the hamlet of Didier and the quarries, is the location of the old fortified house of the Pollouds, a family mentioned in the 14th and 16th centuries. centuries. The Napoleonic land register shows that several buildings were still standing in the first half of the 19th century under the name of “Delay” castle (name of the farmer who bought the land after the Revolution). The chapel, circular in plan, occupies one of the towers of the old castle, as shown by the presence of three keyhole shooting slots. In the 1860s, the owner transformed this tower, then serving as a henhouse, into a public oratory, which he had decorated with a mural and a statuette of Saint Anne.
