Alès is after Toulouse, Montpellier, Perpignan and Nîmes, the fifth largest city in Occitanie. As it is the largest city near the Cévennes mountains, it is nicknamed the capital of the Cévennes. It owes its expansion to its industrial past. It was notably one of the cradles of the Cévennes coal mines.

The arenas of Alès date back to the end of the last century. In 1891, a society of bullfighting enthusiasts had bullfighting arenas built in the Tempéras district. The first bullfights took place in the summer of 1891. Bullfights were banned in the Gard by prefectural decree of August 30, 1895. Nîmes defied the ban. The more cautious and perhaps less passionate Alesians decided to sell their arenas. Passing through the hands of different owners*, they were used for storing wood and coal for a long time until they were bought by the city of Alès in 1965. A local loan was granted for its restoration. The Tourist Office of Alès offers guided tours all year round. Located in the city center of Alès, the arenas host bullfighting or equestrian events, various shows/concerts or sporting events from May to September...
