Tips from the Community

Almi
May 27, 2026, Château de Moncade - Orthez

Chateau built by Gaston VIl Moncade from 1242 to 1262, protected by 3 lines of fortifications, and a "V"-shaped masonry moat. The main building protected the entrance to the keep. The ground floor, a pentagonal keep, without a door, served as a prison; on the first floor was the guardroom. This Castle was redeveloped by Gaston Febus in the 14th century. It was burned during the Wars of Religion, in 1569, and sold, at the Revolution, to demolition contractors who dismantled it. Remains restored in 1845.

Romanesque building with circular apse and rectangular bell tower, of which only the apse remains, dating from the end of the 12th century. Inside, you can see 18th century woodwork, a monumental 17th century wooden chandelier, funerary slabs, and above all a marble high altar made around 1770 by the Mazzetti sculptors of Swiss origin who worked also in Laurède, Montaut, Aire sur l'Adour, Brocas les Forges, Mont de Marsan, Saint Pierre du Mont, Dax, Orthevielle, Pouillon and Sorde l'Abbaye.

With a surface area of several hectares, a shaded park with games for children, picnic tables, public toilets and a relaxation area with a book box, the surroundings of the lake are perfect for resting. Different activities are present: water skiing, archery, swimming, fishing, etc.
