The name of the forest refers to the Nieppe, a now canalized tributary of the Leie. The forest currently covers approximately 2600 hectares, but at one time it must have extended to the village of the same name, located approximately 20 km further west (near Armentières).

As early as the 11th century there was a fort here "Ter Walle in the Nieppebos" Over the centuries, it remained in the possession of the Counts of Flanders and then the Dukes of Burgundy for a long time, before becoming the property of the Counts of Morbecque. (Flemish: "Moerbeke") The current castle dates from the end of the 19th century. An aviation school, the "Institut Aeronautical Amaury de la Grange " (IAAG), is currently located here.
