Here stand not 1, but 2 bunkers. These were placed on the southern edge of the forest and clearly served to defend against attacks from the south. During the First World War, Canadian troops were stationed here, who were to defend Hazebroek against the German attacker. It is therefore highly likely that these bunkers date from this period.

The name of the forest refers to the Nieppe, a now canalized tributary of the Leie. The forest currently covers approximately 2600 hectares, but at one time it must have extended to the village of the same name, located approximately 20 km further west (near Armentières).

As early as the 11th century there was a fort here "Ter Walle in the Nieppebos" Over the centuries, it remained in the possession of the Counts of Flanders and then the Dukes of Burgundy for a long time, before becoming the property of the Counts of Morbecque. (Flemish: "Moerbeke") The current castle dates from the end of the 19th century. An aviation school, the "Institut Aeronautical Amaury de la Grange " (IAAG), is currently located here.
