Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna

Highlight • Religious Site

Wonderful Cistercian-style monastery founded in 1298 by Jaume II el Just, one of the historical jewels that remain from the ancient Kingdom of Valencia.
Since April 2022 it has been open to the public and deserves to be visited. Inside the enclosure there are ruins of the various buildings that were part of the old monastery and that today are partly under recovery work.
It is a very quiet and beautiful place a few meters from the town of Simat that also deserves to be included in the tour and has many hiking trails.

Old narrow-gauge train station

Highlight • Structure

The layout of the natural path takes advantage of all the rural paths between the private farms and crosses the CV-50 again directly at the old Aguas Vivas halt, built to serve an old children's hospital to cure tuberculosis. At present, the hospital attends numerous medical specialties and various differential services. In the same place is the Convent of Santa María de Aguas Vivas, from the 14th century, privately owned, included in the Route of the Monasteries (GR-236), a 90-kilometre hiking itinerary between the towns of Gandía and Alzira, visiting five monasteries of historical and artistic interest and several nature reserves.

L'Ouet

Highlight • Summit

Located at 528 m asl, it is a place with very beautiful panoramic views all around, appreciating the Vall de La Casella, La Serra de Corbera, La Serra de les Agulles and the Levantine coast from Cullera to Tavernes.
Its construction in the form of an igloo that was formerly used as an observatory for fire surveillance is striking. Today it is abandoned and can serve as a refuge for hikers.
The ascent is along a path in good condition with alternatives to get there from La Casella or from Font del Barber and also from Favara. In all cases, it does not present too much technical difficulty, although it is worth going carefully for some loose rock or stone.

significant advantage of this route is that you can choose the difficulty of the conditions of ascent or descent. An asphalt road leads directly to the top.

The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Valldigna was founded by Jaume II the Just on March 15, 1298, who gave the Alfàndec valley to Abbot Bononat de Vila-seca to found a monastery of the order of Cistercian, subsidiary of the monastery of Santes Creus. It was the first monastery of such importance built in the old Kingdom of Valencia, after the Christian conquest. Days after the royal donation, Jaume II, fra Bononat and his retinue gathered at the place of Ràfol (a Christian village in the valley founded after the conquest of Jaume I) to take possession of the territory, plus a mile inland, the castles of Marinyén, Alcalà and the Mondúber tower.
