Does anyone know if it is possible to use the shelter out of season (when it is closed and not managed)?

This is a humble refuge at an altitude of 1,300 metres in the Picos de Europa, which is an intermediate point between the winter resorts of Texu and the Urriellu plain. It has 20 beds, an open kitchen for guests, a fireplace and a wood stove. It also offers a food service and a bar.

Majada de Vegabaño I can say that Vegabaño is one of the most beautiful and charming places I have ever been to. Located in the heart of the Picos de Europa, nestled in a meadow at 1,432 metres above sea level and surrounded by beech and oak forests, this mountain refuge is located. Vegabaño is a little-known and little-frequented paradise, perhaps that is where its charm lies. A place where time stands still and where geology, flora and fauna reach their maximum expression. Vegabaño offers us the possibility of experiencing nature in a special way, surrounded at all times by an incomparable setting and where one is able to find the link between man and nature. A place with easy access to the Refuge where everyone is welcome, and where Julián and Nuria make sure you feel like family, and I can attest that they succeed. An unbeatable option, even for a day out. You can get to Soto by car and take the track to the refuge meadow.

The Refugio Uriello is located at the foot of Pico Uriellu. It offers the possibility of spending the night in a dormitory. There are also hot and cold drinks and snacks. The view is fantastic. We sat on a bench in the sun and admired the summit.

Here you can fill up your water bottles. The refuge also offers the option of staying overnight; in summer the hut is open for catering. We were there in mid-October 2024 and it was closed. The fountain is outside.

One of the most unique is Verónica Cabin, constructed from a recycled steel dome of an American aircraft carrier. It's the highest hut in the Picos de Europa, offering unparalleled panoramic views and an "otherworldly" experience. Another distinctive spot is the historic Chalet Real, an English-style house built in 1912 for King Alfonso XIII, preserved intact at the base of Peña Vieja.
Yes, the Vegabaño Mountain Refuge is particularly suitable for families. Located in a picturesque meadow surrounded by forests, it offers simple yet comfortable facilities and is described as a "multi-purpose refuge" catering to novice hikers and families alike. Its secluded location provides excellent opportunities to observe native fauna.
