Montcau Summit

Highlight • Summit

Montcau (literally Mount Madriguera) is a peak of the Pre-coastal mountain range, located in the province of Barcelona (Spain), between Tarrasa and Manresa, with a height of 1056.8 m. It is included in the natural park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac. It is one of the main peaks of the Sant Llorenç del Munt massif. Its west face presents excellent views over the Manresa plain and the Montserrat massif, while its northeast face faces the town of San Lorenzo Savall and the Montseny massif.

The Montcau in Sant Llorenç del Munt
Its top is rocky, with little vegetation grouped in spots and rows, and with a pyramidal shape.

In the hydrological aspect, it is found in the boundaries of the Llobregat and Besós basins. On its south face the Arenas stream is born.

It is a very characteristic elevation for its triangular shape, and with a great tradition in family hiking. In the upper part there is an orientation table that indicates the peaks and mountains that surround it. On clear days it is possible to see the Pyrenees.

Access is from the Coll de Estenalles, on the road from Tarrasa to Navarclés, where there are several car parks and the Park's interpretation center. From there, we continue walking along a track, first with a steep slope, then a softer one, which takes us to the Coll de Eres, from which we access the top.

Coll de Estenalles

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Coll d'Estanalles is a purely cycling port. Without large slopes and very long on both sides, it is a challenge for many cyclists, regardless of their level.
I recommend uploading it in spring and fall. In summer, it's too hot and in winter... too cold.
Road in perfect condition and with many curves, which gives a more interesting touch for the cyclist.
There are no views up there, but the landscape around is bucolic.

Carena dels Emprius

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Emprius ridge, extending from north to south to the Llor or Finestrelles pass where it connects with Montcau, illustrates the type of relief with flat peaks cut at right angles resulting from the presence of a layer of calcareous conglomerates oligomictic, more resistant to erosion.
The Emprius ridge is the border between the counties of Bages, on the west side, and Vallès Occidental, paradoxically, on the east.

In the summer of 2003, the rocky ridge with little vegetation of the Emprius stood in the way of the great fire (4600 Ha) that came from the east, from Sant Llorenç Savall and Monistrol de Calders, and succeeded stop it; otherwise the fire would have razed the oak groves of the Natural Park of Sant Llorenç del Munt, Montcau and the Sierra de L'Obac.

Montcau (1,056 m)

Highlight • Summit

Fantastic views from the top. To the north, the Pyrenees, to the west of Montserrat and to the east of Montseny.

Summit less frequented than La Mola, well signposted and without technical difficulty, although the last 200 m with force slope. You must wear shoes with good grip and go with caution on foggy days.

Climbing it from the Talamanca side is more manageable than from the Matadepera area. Still, no matter which way you climb, Coll is highly recommended for adding to your bike routes.
