In April 2013, the NABU Moorhus Visitor Center opened on the western edge of the Großes Torfmoor nature reserve. It presents the history of the Großes Torfmoor from its formation to the present day in a lively and diverse permanent exhibition. The original goal was to provide visitors to the Großes Torfmoor with information about the largest raised bog in North Rhine-Westphalia and its regeneration in a permanent exhibition. Today, the Moorhus has evolved and become established. Lectures and exhibitions, as well as a NABU shop, complement the offerings. Source: nrw.nabu.de

The so-called tractor bollards are a sensible and highly effective measure against illegal motor vehicle traffic. Only such massive barriers can convince even stubborn motorists who ignore prohibition signs. 👍👍👍Hopefully, even drivers of extremely high-legged pseudo-off-road vehicles (so-called "SUVs")!

The Great Peat Moor is home to the common snipe, a typical moorland bird, while plants such as cranberry, sundew, rosemary heath and various sphagnum mosses thrive there. There are four well-signposted circular walking routes that serve as a moorland experience trail, offering visitors access to this unique landscape through shelters. The paths lead over three dams that have been built since 1843, and there are observation towers along these routes that provide an overview of the moor.
