There was no water in our river either. The riverbed was completely dry. But the gorge was really beautiful. You should definitely enjoy the view from the railway bridge.

You can still find some pretty old buildings and authentic Spanish life here. However, it's a bit more difficult to find a restaurant on Mondays.

The Church (Hermitage) of Santa Eulalia, located in the Santa Eulalia Colony, between Sax and Villena (Alicante, Alto Vinalopó). It forms part of an agricultural colony built in the late 19th century, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (ethnological) in 2016. It is situated in an area between Sax and Villena, near the Acequia del Rey irrigation canal and the Vinalopó River. The hermitage is located in one of the colony's two main squares, surrounded by houses, factories (flour and alcohol), a theater, a casino, and a train station. The current hermitage was built in 1891, on the site of an earlier medieval one, commissioned by the Count of Alcudia (Antonio de Padúa Saavedra). It is a simple rectangular building with a double-arched bell gable built around 1900; each arch housed bells on its lower level.

Villena is a jewel of inland Alicante, perfect for a cultural, historical, and gastronomic getaway. Monuments and Heritage Atalaya Castle: A 12th-century Almohad fortress, a symbol of the city. This spectacular fortress was built by the Almohad Empire at the end of the 12th century as a refuge for the Muslim population of Villena. The inner wall and the first two floors of the keep, with its imposing vaults—unique among Spanish castles along with the fortress of Biar—date from this period.

The Vía Verde del Xixarra near Villena is a charming cycle path that follows the former railway line “El Xixarra”. About twelve kilometers from Villena, the path crosses the Río Vinalopó via a reconstructed bridge that was originally part of the railway. There, the river flows mostly dry through an impressive gorge carved by the foothills of the Sierra de Mariola. Cyclists can easily navigate the route while enjoying the combination of vineyards, dry valleys, and historic engineering structures. The route is well signposted and combines scenic beauty with the unique appeal of the old railway line.

Parque 9 de Octubre in Petrer is the city's largest green space and a central hub for leisure and recreation. The natural terrain, with its gentle slopes, was preserved during construction, allowing terraces, green spaces, and pathways to blend harmoniously into the surroundings. A particularly striking feature is the artificial lake with its impressive geyser-like fountain. The park also boasts an open-air amphitheater, regularly used for concerts and cultural events, as well as well-maintained gardens, children's playgrounds, and a small bar or restaurant. For cyclists, the park offers a dedicated route that winds through the entire grounds, suitable for both leisurely rides and short training sessions. With its combination of nature, modern design, and diverse uses, Parque 9 de Octubre is a popular spot for exercise, socializing, and relaxation in the heart of Petrer.
