In the heart of Harmelen's village center stands the Dutch Reformed Church. The oldest predecessor of this church was likely founded around 1297, the year of its earliest mention. From 1288 until the Reformation, the church had ties to the Johanniter Order, which established a commandery in Harmelen. The church suffered fires and looting several times. As early as 1593, it was written, "The church was burned down here; but there, in it, a very suitable place has been created for preaching." In the Disaster Year of 1672, French troops wreaked havoc, and the great church fire on June 23, 1900, caused by a lightning strike, is well-known. In 1753, the historian of the State of the United Netherlands noted that the church was equipped with "two elaborately constructed masonry columns on which the wooden vault rested." During the restoration work after the fire of 1900, the columns were replaced. They are constructed of brick alternating with sandstone, while the capitals and basements are made of red brick. Incidentally, the restoration of the church after the great fire is due to the enthusiasm of the renowned architect P.J.H. Cuypers, who was working nearby at De Haar Castle at the time. Elements such as the entrance to the church and the stone balustrade around the church tower were his creation.
