Baños de Vilo Hot Springs

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Baños de Vilo are located next to the Arroyo de Guaro, about 3.5 kilometers from the city of Periana, in the Axarquia region of Málaga. One of the most unknown places in this province, but with a very, very beautiful setting.
There is a pool with healing water (9 meters in diameter and 1.3 meters deep). This body of water was already known in Muslim times, with a spring that fills the pool and a bench to put clothes on if necessary.
Admission to the Vilo-Bad is completely free of charge and possible without prior registration. There is no timetable, but it is recommended to respect the quiet times of the neighbors.
Should you arrive at the Poza de Vilo when it is closed, the gate can be opened without any problems as there is no key.
The water has medicinal properties. It is calcium water containing nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and magnesium, which is produced at 21ºC and is particularly suitable for the treatment of skin diseases. It smells slightly like rotten eggs due to the sulfur.
Its smell gives this place its essence and after a bath in these sulphurous waters, the skin is soft and hydrated.

Zafarraya Plain

Highlight • Natural Monument

The 'fields' at this elevation are dominated by rocks, offering a very limited land use, but a beautiful atmosphere. Geologist call this formation "polje": a tectonic, karstic depression, here situated in the limestone massif of Sierra Gorda. The Zafarraya polje is one of the main poljes in the Iberian Peninsula and the largest (22 km²) in the Betic Cordillera. It is situated to the south of the Sierra Gorda de Loja in the western-central part of the Betic Cordillera, in the Subbetic (External Zone). In many ways, this is a typical polje: it is an endorheic depression, a plain with several sinkholes (ponors), the main one situated to the NW, where the waters disappear under the surface to spring up many kilometres away, in the NE of the Sierra Gorda. Karst is created when water dissolves limestone underground, creating fine cracks, underground rivers, and often colapsing caves, leading to depressions in the landscape. Occasionally, the depression can be flooded during heavy rainfall, like in the mid 1990s.

The Zafarraya polje is a closed depression with a flat bottom, surrounded by limestone mountains that are strongly karstified. The waters of the polje are absorbed by several ponors (sinkholes), and during heavy rainfall the polje can be temporarily flooded. This makes it an interesting example of karst landscape and geological processes.
