Church of Sant Romà de Sau (Submerged Bell Tower)

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sau reservoir is a Spanish hydraulic infrastructure built on the Ter river, located in the municipality of Vilanova de Sau, at the foot of the Guilleries massif, in the Osona region, province of Barcelona, Catalonia.

It is part of a system of three reservoirs, together with those of Susqueda and Pasteral, which joins the counties of Osona and La Selva. The reservoir, inaugurated in 1962, covered the town of San Román de Sau, the remains of which, especially the bell tower of the temple, are visible when the water level is low and, even in times of prolonged drought, the town is left to the discovered and it is possible to visit it.

The church of the Sau swamp is registered as the oldest in the world that is preserved standing in the water. This is confirmed by a study promoted by the international entity for world record records Official World Record with the collaboration of a research group from the University of Barcelona in the year 2021.

Bellmunt Sanctuary

Highlight • Religious Site

The Bellmunt is a mountain of 1,247 meters in the municipality of Sant Pere de Torelló, in the region of Osona, and at the top is the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Bellmunt, built directly on the rock. Before there was a fortress, the Castle of Sa Reganyada, from which you could see what we now know as the Plain of Vic, the Pyrenees, the Ges Valley and the Bisaura. On clear days, we can see Montserrat. It is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive lookouts in the Osona region and in Catalonia.
It is the culminating point of the homonymous range.
Its main ascent routes are from Vidrà on the GR-3, from Santa Maria de Besora and Sant Pere de Torelló on the GR-151 or on the PR C-45 from Torelló or Sant Pere de Torelló. From the top of the peak you can see a good panorama of the Eastern Pyrenees, the Transversal mountain range and the plain of Vic.
At the top is a geodesic vertex (ICC reference 292092001).
This peak is included in the list of the 100 peaks of the FEEC.

Roman Temple of Vic

Highlight • Historical Site

The Roman temple of Vic is located in the upper area of the city of Vic, on Padre Xifré street, in the heart of the Osona region (Catalonia).

The building was built at the beginning of the 2nd century, the golden age of the Roman Empire. The temples were a basic piece of every Roman city, even so, the whereabouts of this specific one were unknown until the late date of 1882. In the 11th century, the temple was literally covered by the structure of the Moncada Castle, later It became the residence of the Veguers and finally, the Vic prison. It was not until 1882, during the demolition procedures of the old castle, when the workers sighted with amazement a Corinthian capital.

The Mother of God depicted and venerated here is the Virgin Mary of Lourdes. This well-known Marian pilgrimage site is located in the French Pyrenees and is visited annually by large numbers of people, including many sick people hoping for healing. The devotional image of the Mother of God has become widespread – not only in France – with believers building Lourdes chapels and grottos everywhere. The church feast day of "Our Lady of Lourdes" is February 11th, the anniversary of the Marian apparition (1858), when the Mother of God appeared to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in a rock grotto very close to Lourdes. Bernadette later became a nun and died at the age of just 35. On December 8th (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary), 1933, she was canonized by Pope Pius XI. The commemoration of the Madonna of Lourdes is also World Day of the Sick.

Very curious temple due to its proportions. It has preserved its entire structure in its primitive elements. The only tagline made in the course of its history was the belfry on the wall opposite the apse. Rectangular plan with a single nave crowned to the east by a semicircular apse. It is covered with a barrel vault reinforced by a single main arch. The covers were non-existent; that of the nave has been resolved with Arab tiles while that of the apse is with stone slabs very well cut and jointed. Below this cover there is a course of very regular rectangular stones placed in the restoration as a cornice. The closing wall of the nave at the eastern corner rises above the roof level. The apparatus is made of limestone ashlars, squared and of very irregular sizes, arranged in irregular courses held with lime mortar. The entrance door opens at noon, resolved with a semicircular arch made of well-cut voussoirs. In this same corner there is a semicircular window and another equal to the west corner that, with the one in the back of the apse, completes the lighting of the church.

It is a spectacular 6.7 km climb, with spectacular ramps and a narrow road, very well preserved, very winding, drawing all kinds of curves until reaching the Sanctuary. The 360 panoramic views are wonderful: Montseny, flat Vic, the Pyrenees, the sea. You can not ask for much more. I recommend climbing it on a day with good weather to enjoy the views. With the bike you have to reach the entrance of the chapel, overcoming a narrow, concreted and steep final ramp. Don't hesitate and go to the top. A great place even if the reason why this village reappears after 60 years is more than sad. Water shortage in Catalonia.
