Birmingham Canal Navigations

Highlight • Cycleway

Around 160 miles (257 km) of waterways make up the Birmingham Canal Navigations, with over 100 miles (160 km) still navigable today. The Birmingham Canal opened in 1772 to connect Birmingham to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Today, you are more likely to see residential and tourist narrow boats traversing the waters than barges carrying goods.

Many areas along the canal have been redeveloped into lively restaurants and bars, whilst quieter spots are still a haven for wildlife.

Lichfield Cathedral

Highlight • Historical Site

Lichfield Cathedral is a stunning medieval church and the only cathedral in England with three spires. Built from 1195 to 1340, the cathedral wasn't always a calm place – it was severely damaged during the English Civil War. During this time, soldiers demolished the central spire, smashed the stained glass and damaged the roof. The destruction was only fully repaired in the 19th century.

You can visit the cathedral from 9.30am - 5pm Monday to Saturday and from 12.30pm - 5pm on Sundays. For more information, visit: lichfield-cathedral.org

The first church was built here in about 700AD. Then the Normans built the first cathedral soon after the invasion of 1066. This was then rebuilt in a gothic style in 1340. The building has been besieged several times during the English Civil War it suffered great damaged but was mended soon after the war finished. The cathedral was then restored again in the 19th century to roughly what you see today. It's the only English medieval cathedral with three spires. The cathedral is normally open to visitors from 10:00 - 17:00 on Mon to Sat and 12:00 - 17:00 on Sundays.
