Got a little lost here, but so beautiful it didn’t matter!

This section of the walk passes through and around land usedfor training racehorses. I had just walked through two fields with two horses in each field. They all seemed pleased to see me. Trotted up to me, nuzzled my hand and walked with me across their field. Once again I fell short - didn't bring any carrots or apples🙄 And then I met these two characters at the top of the hill who obviously hadn't got the message that I didn't have any treats. They were happy to pose for photo's anyway 😁

Pause under the old railway bridge to hide from the rain or get some great views.

There used to be a railway line parallel to the path here, traces of which can be followed from here to Bourton-on-the-Water

A fun winding track that travels through the woodland on the banks of the River Windrush. Eventually the woodland peters out and you descend a lush flowing stretch of singletrack down to the rivers edge.

This stunning grove of trees lies between Notgrove and Cold Aston. Most spectacular in summer but still evocative in the colder months, the grove houses the Gloucestershire Way long-distance path; it's a bridleway at this point. The grove splits the trail, with two concurrent paths and trees running down the centre as well as on both sides.

This tiny Cotswold village is surely a place that time forgot. With a Norman church and plenty of 17th- and 18th-century houses, wandering along the lanes will be punctuated by photo stops. The village is also home to Salperton Park, a beautiful estate with a Palladian-style manor house.

Yes, there is a wide variety of options. You can explore over 430 routes in the region, ranging from gentle walks to challenging mountain hikes.
The Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails is an excellent choice. It's a relatively flat, multi-use path built on a former railroad line, making it ideal for a relaxed walk. For a scenic loop around a lake, the trail at Hazle Township Community Park is another popular and accessible option.
Hickory Run State Park is famous for its waterfalls, including the beautiful Hawk Falls. For a truly spectacular display, Ricketts Glen State Park is renowned for its Falls Trail System, which features over 20 named waterfalls, though it is a bit further afield.
Many state parks in the area, like Hickory Run and Lehigh Gorge, are generally dog-friendly, but pets must be kept on a leash. However, be aware that some local parks, such as Hazle Township Community Park, do not permit dogs on their trails, so it's always best to check specific park regulations before you go.
Hikers have several highly-regarded options:
For a rewarding loop, consider the Salperton Village loop from Salperton. It's a moderate hike of about 5.3 miles (8.5 km) that offers a good mix of terrain and elevation without being overly strenuous.
The trails in this region are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Reviewers often praise the variety, from the rugged beauty of the state park gorges to the tranquility of the local rail-trails.
There is a dedicated parking area specifically for the trail, listed as 'Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails Parking' in Hazle Township. This provides direct and convenient access to the path.
Expect a deep, steep-walled gorge carved by the Lehigh River. The main trail follows a gentle, abandoned railroad grade along the river, offering stunning views of rock outcroppings and the surrounding forest. It's a very scenic but relatively flat walk along the river itself.
Yes, if you're looking for a longer day out, the Fox Covert – Bowman's Hay loop from Cold Aston is a great choice. This moderate route covers nearly 7.8 miles (12.6 km) and takes you through varied landscapes.
Sturdy hiking shoes are a must, especially for the rocky trails in the state parks. Always carry water, snacks, and a map or fully charged phone with a GPS app. Weather in the Poconos can change quickly, so packing layers and a waterproof jacket is highly recommended, even on a sunny day.
Absolutely. Many trails, like the Switchback Railroad Trail and paths in Nescopeck State Park, are beautiful in the winter. Just be sure to wear appropriate footwear with good traction, such as microspikes, as trails can be icy or snow-covered.
