The two-story brick building, decorated with two soaring towers, is one of the architectural gems of Wrzeszcz. The stylish building served as an officers' mess, which during the Second German Reich served soldiers, commonly known as the Black Hussars, stationed in the barracks at ul. Słowacki (German: Hochstrieß), and during the period of the Free City of Gdańsk, to the policemen stationed there. After the war, the barracks were taken over by soldiers of the Polish People's Army, and the former casino was transformed into the so-called "Garrison Club". Despite its name, the building served not only soldiers for over 40 years. Although the barracks area was closely guarded and ordinary mortals were not allowed to enter, older residents of Wrzeszcz came to the club to watch films on the big screen. In 1957, the "Zawisza" cinema was opened here and operated continuously until 2002. The military cinema consisted of one room, located on the first floor of the building. The spacious room was about 6 m high. Its walls were covered with wooden cladding, and between them there were rows of about a hundred armchairs upholstered with red fabric. A canvas screen hung over a small stage, onto which a black curtain was lowered after the show.
