Very shallow if it’s been dry, not worth visiting for swimming but good view of the loch.

The landscape is stunningly beautiful, but the paths are not as easy to walk as advertised. The barely discernible path up leads almost entirely through muddy, boggy terrain. We often sank ankle-deep, at times knee-deep. From Loch Enech onwards, there is no discernible path; the ground is drier, but eroded and full of holes. The way down is the official route, and considerably better. They've tried to make everything more walkable with fleece and gravel, but the water has already washed away much of it. Unfortunately, it's hard to enjoy the scenery while walking, as you're so busy trying not to slip and sink with every step. In the end, we were glad to be back down with our bones intact. The path can only be recommended with reservations.

Wide grassy ridge between Benyellary and Merrick summits. Very windy when I was on it, with beautiful views down to valley/glen

The bench is no longer there. There was a swallows nest in the room to left of door so try not to disturb it. Beautiful views from it and neighbouring burn

when the water level is fine it's lovely place for a dip and cooling off, sadly it is too smal for a swim. lower down the path there may be a better spot but I like slightly hidden spots so not everyone had to see me

2024 update: There's no windows or doors, but there's a roof that looks pretty solid. Use at your own risk, of course 🙏

Great little hike with little foot traffic and a free carpark. Lovely views when the clouds lift and babbling brooks all over.

Please consult the large notice board at the trailhead. This is a commercial forest and currently, timber harvesting is taking place along the southern flank of the Loch (hence tha barriers encountered by abp1). There are diversions in place to avoid the southern flank, rerouting via the north shore. This is detailed on the notice board. Also, please be aware that this is not an official MTB route, and taking a bike along it is not a good idea since the trail will have walkers of all abilities along its length, most of whom will not be expecting MTBs at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to park for hikes around Round Loch of Glenhead?

For hikes starting near Loch Trool, the Loch Trool Trail Car Park is a convenient, free option, though it has limited space. For more facilities and a larger parking area, the Glentrool Visitor Centre is a popular choice. Payment there is often by card or app, so it's best to be prepared.

Are the hiking trails in this area suitable for dogs?

Yes, Galloway Forest Park is generally very welcoming to dogs. The trails through the woodlands and around the lochs offer great walking opportunities. However, you will be passing through areas with wildlife and potentially livestock, so it's important to keep your dog under control, especially on the open moorland of the higher routes.

What is the terrain like on the trails?

The terrain varies significantly. Lower-level paths, particularly around Loch Trool, are well-maintained and pass through ancient oak woodlands. As you ascend towards the higher lochs like Round Loch of Glenhead, the trails become more challenging. Expect a mix of boggy ground, tussock grass, and rocky sections of granite, requiring sturdy, waterproof footwear.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks?

Yes, the area around the Glentrool Visitor Centre and the lower sections of Loch Trool offer accessible paths suitable for families. These routes stay on lower ground, avoiding the strenuous climbs and difficult terrain of the higher hills, while still providing beautiful views of the forest and loch.

Do I need special navigation skills for these hikes?

For the main, signposted trails around Loch Trool, navigation is straightforward. However, for the more strenuous treks into the hills, such as routes over the Rig of the Jarkness, good navigation skills are essential. The paths are often not clearly marked, and the wild terrain can be disorienting, especially in poor weather. A map and compass, and the ability to use them, are highly recommended.

Can I see any waterfalls on the walks?

Yes, the landscape is crisscrossed by numerous burns and waterfalls. Hikes around Loch Trool often pass by scenic cascades, such as the Gairland Burn and Buchan Waterfall. These are particularly impressive after rainfall and add to the beauty of the woodland trails.

What kind of wildlife might I spot in the area?

The ancient oak woodlands, particularly the Buchan and Glenhead woods, are rich in wildlife. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and roe deer among the trees. The area is also good for birdwatching, with species like redstarts present in the woods. On the open hills, you might see various birds of prey.

What is Bruce's Stone?

Bruce's Stone is a large granite boulder that serves as a historical landmark commemorating a victory by Robert the Bruce in 1307. It's located at a popular viewpoint overlooking Loch Trool and is often the starting point for hikes ascending The Merrick.

Are there any shorter but challenging hill walks?

For a strenuous but rewarding climb that doesn't cover as much distance as the full Merrick ascent, consider the Bruce's Stone Memorial – Benyellary Summit loop from Buchan Burn. This route offers a significant workout with nearly 600 meters of ascent, providing fantastic views from the summit of Benyellary.

What makes Galloway Forest Park special at night?

Galloway Forest Park is a designated Dark Sky Park, one of the best places in the UK for stargazing. The lack of light pollution means that on a clear night, the views of the stars, planets, and the Milky Way can be absolutely spectacular. It adds a unique dimension to an overnight visit to the area.

What do other hikers say about the trails around Round Loch of Glenhead?

The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.3 stars. Hikers frequently praise the sense of wildness and solitude on the higher routes, the stunning views over the multiple lochs, and the beauty of the ancient woodlands around Loch Trool.
