The church ruins date from the early 16th century but include stones from a much earlier pre 11th century church. After a new church was built, this one fell into disrepair, but the graveyard remains in use.

Here stands the remains of the once magnificent Drum Manor house. The house was built in the 1800s and was bought from the Forest Service in 1964 when it was turned into a park for the public. The park now features a campsite, hiking trails, gardens and a play park.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any good circular walks in the Rousky area?

Yes, the region has several enjoyable loop trails. A great option is the Dungannon Park Weir loop from Dungannon, which takes you on a pleasant 4.5-mile (7.2 km) walk through scenic parkland. Many trails in the local forest parks are also designed as loops.

What are the trails like for beginners or casual walkers?

The area is well-suited for beginners. You'll find many easy, well-maintained paths. For a shorter, accessible walk, consider the Drum Manor House Ruins loop from The Rock. At just over 2 km, it's a gentle introduction to the local scenery.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails?

Dogs are welcome on many trails, especially in places like Gortin Glen Forest Park and Davagh Forest, provided they are kept on a lead. However, some routes pass through active farmland with livestock, so always check for local signage and be respectful of the environment. The Owenreagh River area is a site of special scientific interest, so it's crucial to keep dogs under control to protect the wildlife.

What is the terrain typically like around Rousky?

The terrain is varied but generally manageable. You can expect a mix of stone and grass paths, farm tracks, and forest trails. While many routes are gentle, some, like the Rousky Walk, include steeper sections that ascend hillsides, offering rewarding views of the surrounding valleys.

Are there any family-friendly hiking options?

Definitely. Gortin Glen Forest Park is a popular choice for families, offering a variety of walking trails, a scenic drive, a play park, and a coffee shop. Davagh Forest is another excellent option with its own play park and trails suitable for all ages.

Where can I find hikes with historical interest?

The region is rich in history. For a walk that combines nature with the past, the Derryloran Old Church loop from Cookstown is a moderate trail that takes you past historic church ruins. The wider Sperrin area also contains ancient sites like the Beaghmore Stone Circles.

What are the best places for a peaceful, quiet hike?

For a tranquil experience, the Rousky Walk itself is an excellent choice. It's an off-road route that follows the Owenreagh River through farmland and natural woodland. Another quiet option is the An Creagán Visitor Centre, which has a biodiversity trail through a forest and along a burn, offering peaceful views.

How do other hikers rate the trails around Rousky?

The routes around Rousky are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Hikers often praise the peaceful, unspoiled nature of the trails and the beautiful scenery of the Sperrin Mountains.

Are there any good hikes in the wider Sperrin Mountains?

Yes, Rousky is a great starting point for exploring the Sperrins, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For more extensive hill walks, you can explore waymarked trails like the Craignamaddy Circuit or Robbers Table, which offer stunning views across the mountain ranges. You can find more information on the Visit Mid Ulster website.

Where can I park when hiking near Rousky?

For specific trails, parking is usually available at the trailhead. Gortin Glen Forest Park and Davagh Forest have dedicated car parks, with the latter having multiple parking areas. For walks starting in smaller hamlets, parking may be limited, so please park considerately and do not block access for local residents.

Are there any trails with waterfalls?

While the region is known for its beautiful rivers and burns, like the Owenreagh River, prominent waterfalls are not a key feature of the main trails directly around Rousky. The hikes focus more on rolling hills, forest paths, and serene riverbank scenery.

Is it possible to go for a walk and then visit a pub or cafe?

Yes, after a good walk you can find refreshments nearby. Gortin Glen Forest Park has a highly-regarded coffee shop on-site, making it easy to relax after exploring its trails. The nearby towns of Omagh and Cookstown also offer a variety of traditional pubs and cafes.
