Great Lake to run around, paths are a little bumpy but that doesn’t spoil the run

Tongwell Lake seems to be Milton Keynes’ very own swan haven. The path around the lake is easy to follow as it only takes around 30 minutes to walk the whole way round. At times it’s not possible to see the lake through the reeds and bushes but in the openings you can enjoy some nice views of nature. There’s a large island in the middle of the lake, so if you’re a birdwatcher we recommend bringing some binoculars to spot any birds over there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park for hikes around Campbell Park?

Parking is generally available at the main car parks for the larger lakes, such as Willen Lake and Caldecotte Lake. These serve as excellent starting points for many of the trails in the area. Arriving early is recommended, especially on sunny weekends when it can get busy.

Are the trails suitable for families with children?

Yes, the area is very family-friendly. The terrain is mostly flat, and there are many easy, shorter routes. A great option is the Willen Lake South loop from Campbell Park, which is a gentle walk through parkland that's perfect for little legs.

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Campbell Park?

Dogs are welcome on most trails, making it a great place to walk with your four-legged friend. The open parklands and waterside paths offer plenty of space. Please keep dogs under control, especially near wildlife and other park users, and follow any local signage regarding leads.

What is the terrain like? Are the hikes difficult?

The terrain around Campbell Park is generally flat and easy to navigate, consisting of well-maintained parkland paths and canal towpaths. The majority of the 40 routes in the area are rated as easy, with only a few moderate options and a couple of longer, difficult trails for those seeking more of a challenge.

Are there any circular walks available?

Yes, many of the most popular routes are circular loops. This makes planning your day straightforward as you'll end up back where you started. The Willen Lake loop is a classic example of an easy, circular walk around the water.

Are there any walks along canals or lakes?

Absolutely. The landscape is defined by its man-made lakes and canals. Many routes follow the shoreline of Willen Lake or Caldecotte Lake, while others incorporate sections of the Grand Union Canal towpath. The Tongwell and Willen Lake loop offers a nice mix of both parkland and canal-side walking.

Are there any options for a longer, more challenging hike?

What should I pack for a hike here?

For most walks, comfortable walking shoes are sufficient as the paths are generally well-paved. It's always wise to bring a waterproof jacket, as the weather can change. Also, pack some water and snacks, especially if you're planning one of the longer routes away from the main lake facilities.
