Tips from the Community

Beyond the Horizon
October 3, 2023, Benburb Priory

As you step through the magnificent gate, you will be enveloped by the timelessness of this historic place. The old walls, which shine in the sun, tell stories from times long past and invite you to discover them. The municipality has enriched this treasure trove of history with a library and a museum that attract knowledge seekers and history lovers. In the quiet rooms of the library you can leaf through old writings and be transported back to times gone by, while the museum brings the history of the place and its people to life. After a journey of discovery through history and culture, the Priorat's café beckons with its seductive scent of freshly brewed coffee. Here, in an ambience that wonderfully combines modernity and history, you can take a little time out. Choose from comfortable seating inside or settle on one of the terraces to soak up the rays while munching on delicious pastries. But the Priory has even more to offer. A dreamy little walkway winds from the building down to the river. A path lined with blooming flowers and old trees that acts as an invitation to explore this wonderful terrain in all its splendor.

This handsome looking weir stretches across the river like a silent sentinel, capturing the clear waters of the Blackwater as they glisten in the sun and bathe the surrounding area in a calming sound. Next to the weir there is a green oasis in which time seems to stand still. Lush green areas, peppered with scattered trees, invite you to linger. Picnic benches, strategically placed, offer the ideal place to watch the water play at the weir, let your thoughts wander and unwind. Here, on the banks of the Blackwater, you can escape everyday life for a moment and lose yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of the park.

A number of paved and gravel trails will lead you around the park and invite you to discover the nature and history of this 300-acre oasis. The park also features an outdoor gym if you feel like taking your activity up a notch.

The priory is a beautiful building in Benburb that invites the community to visit the library, museum, or grab a coffee and a scone at the wonderful cafe (fit with lovely indoor and outdoor seating). Frequently Asked Questions

How many hiking trails are available around Tyros?

There are over 10 hiking routes documented on komoot for the Tyros area, offering a variety of experiences from coastal walks to mountain ascents. These trails are primarily easy to moderate, catering to different fitness levels.

What is the best time of year to hike in Tyros?

Tyros, with its Mediterranean climate, is ideal for hiking during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months. During these periods, temperatures are pleasant, and the landscapes are vibrant. Summer can be very hot, especially for mountain treks, while winter offers cooler temperatures but some higher mountain paths might be less accessible.

Are there easy hiking trails suitable for beginners or families in Tyros?

Yes, Tyros offers several easy trails perfect for beginners or families. For a gentle introduction, consider the Benburb Valley Park route, which is 2.8 miles (4.6 km) with minimal elevation. Another accessible option is the Carroll's Wood loop from Armagh, an easy 3.3 miles (5.2 km) path winding through wooded landscapes.

Are there any more challenging hikes around Tyros?

While many trails are easy, there are moderate options for those seeking a bit more challenge. The Armagh Friary loop from Armagh is a moderate 4.9 miles (7.9 km) trail that leads through varied terrain. The region's proximity to Mount Parnon also suggests opportunities for more demanding ascents, though specific routes may require local guidance.

What natural features can I expect to see while hiking around Tyros?

Tyros is nestled between the Aegean Sea and Mount Parnon, offering a diverse landscape. You can expect stunning coastal views, especially on paths connecting Tyros to Zaritsi Beach or Tigani Beach. Inland, trails lead through forests of pines, firs, and oaks on Mount Parnon, part of the Natura 2000 protected area. The broader Arcadia region also features rivers like the Alpheios and Lousios, and impressive gorges.

Are there any interesting landmarks or historical sites to explore near Tyros?

Absolutely. Hikers can explore the prehistoric walls of Kastro on the hill above Tyros harbor, offering fabulous views. A circular hike around Tyros village might include visiting well-preserved windmills and the remains of an ancient castle. Further afield, trails lead to the scenic Agios Georgios Monastery and the impressive Monastery of Panagia Elona, dramatically built into a cliffside on Mount Parnon. You can also visit the Tassagh Viaduct or the ancient site of Navan Fort (Emain Macha).

Are there circular hiking routes in Tyros?

Yes, several routes in the area are designed as loops. For example, the Carroll's Wood loop from Armagh Observatory is an easy 3.4 miles (5.4 km) circular path. Another option is The Mall, Armagh – The Palace Demesne loop from Armagh, an easy 4.1 miles (6.6 km) route.

Are dogs allowed on hiking trails in Tyros?

Generally, dogs are welcome on many outdoor trails in Greece, especially in natural areas. However, it's always advisable to keep them on a leash, especially in protected areas or near livestock, and to carry water for them. Specific regulations might apply to certain monasteries or archaeological sites, so check local signage.

What amenities are available near the hiking routes in Tyros?

Tyros is a charming seaside village, so you'll find cafes, tavernas, and accommodation options within the village itself. For routes starting directly from Tyros, amenities are easily accessible. For trails further into Mount Parnon or other remote areas, it's best to carry sufficient water and snacks, as services may be limited. The Benburb Priory also offers a cafe.

Are there opportunities for less crowded hikes in Tyros?

While popular coastal paths can see more visitors, venturing slightly inland or exploring the trails on Mount Parnon can lead to more secluded experiences. The vastness of the Arcadian landscape means it's often possible to find peaceful routes, especially outside of peak tourist season. Exploring trails to traditional mountain villages like Sapounakaiika and Prastos can offer a quieter experience.

What should I bring for a hike in Tyros?

Given the varied terrain and climate, essential items include sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing. For longer or more challenging routes, a map or GPS device (like komoot's app) is recommended. If hiking in warmer months, consider starting early to avoid the midday heat.

Is public transport available to reach trailheads in Tyros?

Public transport options in rural Peloponnese, including Tyros, are generally limited compared to major cities. While there might be bus services connecting Tyros to larger towns, reaching specific trailheads often requires a car. It's advisable to check local bus schedules in advance or consider taxi services for access to more remote starting points.
