The city wall can be walked all the way around the city and offers interesting views. You can see the churches, down to the Bogside, the main street with the bunkered court, and the beautiful Guildhall. You can also see the curbs of the different districts, which are colored according to their affiliation. While the scenery seemed a bit threatening on our first visit in the 1990s, this seems to have given way to a peaceful openness, the architectural expression of which has become the beautiful, curved, connecting Peace Bridge.

The picturesque old town of Derry is completely surrounded by a historic city wall, which served a purpose until the recent past. You can walk around the city on it and have a good view of the Bogside. You can also observe the differently painted pavement edges of the two camps as you walk around. It is to be hoped that in the future this will be just folklore in a hopefully more united society.

This traffic-free cycle path runs alongside the River Foyle, and is part of the Foyle Valley cycle route connecting Derry City to the border towns of Lifford and Strabane. The River Foyle is 80 miles long (129 km) and is one of the fastest flowing rivers in Europe for its size.

Saint Columb's Cathedral was the first cathedral built after the Reformation. It is the city's most historic building, housing artifacts from the siege.

There are many famous graves in the cemetery. St. Augustine's has a history that is second to none.

The walls were built between 1613 and 1618, mainly from the ruins of medieval monastic buildings, to designs by the engineer Peter Benson of London and the architect Sir Edward Doddington of Dungiven. The construction was financed with funds from the Irish Society and individual London businessmen, in accordance with the royal charter of King James I, who in return received large tracts of land in the Derry area. The walls were intended to protect residents (mainly immigrants from England and Scotland) from attacks by local Irish rebels. Despite sieges in 1641, 1649 and 1689, Derry's city walls were never destroyed, testifying to their careful planning and quality. The walls, equipped with powerful defenses and square artillery bastions, are around 1.5 km long. A pedestrian path for tourists is laid along the walls.
