The Tremola San Gottardo is your accommodation at the foot of the Tremola in Airolo. The house on the old Gotthard Pass road is perfectly located at the beginning of what is probably the most bike-romantic alpine road in Ticino (or Switzerland?). Cycling enthusiasts will find a workshop with small parts and spares, a locked bike storage room, an information point offering maps and bikes for rent, as well as a laundry service for sportswear and a charging station for e-bikes at Bed&Bike. After your bike tour, you can refresh yourself with a drink at the bar or enjoy one of the simple dishes made with local ingredients. The solitude of the Gotthard – only the whistling of the wind in your ears…

So there I am standing in front of the wind turbines on the Gotthard Pass and thinking: If Don Quixote had been here, he would have had his greatest day. These enormous wings, turning majestically in the wind – to him, they wouldn't have been wind turbines, but dangerous giants with overlong arms. He would have lowered his lance, spurred his horse on, and landed in a high arc at the foot of the pass. I, on the other hand, prefer to stay on safe ground, look up, and think: It's a good thing these things are no longer an enemy, but instead generate electricity. My personal windmills on the Gotthard are, at most, the steep climb and the headwind – and those can be conquered without a lance.

Yes, several routes are designed as loops. For a challenging experience, consider the Idyllic Valley – Bocchetta del Lago Nero loop from Il Madone, which is 9.4 miles long. A slightly shorter, moderate option is the Lago del Zött – Robiei loop from Lago dei Cavagnöö, covering 5.5 miles through an alpine lake landscape.
For experienced mountaineers seeking a challenge, the Pizzo Cristallina Summit loop from Ossasco is a demanding 10.8-mile route with significant elevation gain, leading to the Pizzo Cristallina summit. Another difficult option is the Idyllic Valley – Bocchetta del Lago Nero loop from Il Madone, known for its rugged, high-alpine terrain.
The Lake del Narèt area is characterized by challenging, high-alpine terrain with significant elevation gains, making most routes suitable for experienced mountaineers. While there are no routes specifically designated as 'easy' in our selection, the Lago del Zött – Robiei loop from Lago dei Cavagnöö and View of Airolo loop from Airolo are rated as moderate, which might be manageable for families with older, experienced children who are accustomed to alpine hiking and have good fitness.
The tranquil, 100% natural environment around Lake del Narèt offers opportunities to encounter alpine wildlife. Keep an eye out for chamois and ibex, which are often spotted in this high-altitude region.
The best time for mountaineering around Lake del Narèt is typically during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the snow has melted and weather conditions are generally more stable. Due to its high altitude (Lake del Narèt is at 2310 meters), conditions can change rapidly, and early or late season visits may still encounter snow and ice.
Given the challenging terrain and high-alpine environment, it's essential to be well-prepared. We recommend sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, appropriate layered clothing for varying weather conditions, a backpack with sufficient water and food, navigation tools (map, compass, or GPS), and sun protection. For more difficult routes, alpine experience and sure-footedness are crucial.
Absolutely. The area is rich with natural beauty and unique structures. You can explore other stunning alpine lakes like Lago Nero, Lago Superiore, Lago di Sassolo, and Lago dei Cavagnöö. The two large dams, Narèt I and Narèt II, which form the artificial reservoir, are also impressive man-made landmarks. Additionally, the Capanna Cristallina (Cristallina Hut) is a key point for longer treks and offers a place to rest.
Trailheads for routes like the Idyllic Valley – Bocchetta del Lago Nero loop start from Il Madone. For the Pizzo Cristallina Summit loop, Ossasco serves as a starting point. The Lago del Zött – Robiei loop begins from Lago dei Cavagnöö. Specific parking information is usually available at these starting points, often requiring a drive up the demanding road to the lake.
While many trails in Switzerland are dog-friendly, it's important to consider the challenging, high-alpine nature of the routes around Lake del Narèt. Ensure your dog is fit for significant elevation gains and rugged terrain. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or grazing animals, and be mindful of any local regulations or protected areas. Carry enough water for both yourself and your dog.
The Lake del Narèt area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Mountaineers often praise the stunning alpine lake landscape, the majestic 'grey giants' (mountains), and the true high-alpine experience offered by the challenging and rugged terrain. The tranquility and natural beauty of the region are also frequently highlighted.
Yes, while many routes are difficult, there are moderate options available. The Lago del Zött – Robiei loop from Lago dei Cavagnöö is a 5.5-mile moderate trail through an alpine lake landscape. Another moderate choice is the View of Airolo loop from Airolo, which covers 4.4 miles.
Reaching Lake del Narèt directly by public transport can be challenging due to its remote, high-alpine location. While the Valle Maggia, which leads to the area, is accessible, the final ascent to Lake del Narèt often requires private vehicle access or specialized shuttle services. It's advisable to research local bus schedules to the nearest villages (e.g., in Val Sambuco) and plan for alternative transport for the final leg.
The Lake del Narèt region is dotted with numerous crystal-clear alpine lakes, such as Lago Nero, Lago Superiore, and Lago dei Cavagnöö. While the water is often very cold due to the high altitude, wild swimming is possible for those brave enough to embrace the refreshing temperatures. Always exercise caution, be aware of water depths and currents, and respect the natural environment.
