August 27, 2026, Blue Heron Lagoon

For decades, the 42-acre Blue Heron Lagoon on the eastern tip of Belle Isle has been separated from the Detroit River by a land bridge, cutting off its wetland and nursery area for river fish and wildlife. Thanks to a grant from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, workers were able to reconnect this habitat with the river, granting access to Great Lakes fish. The project also improved five acres of coastal wetland and nearly an acre of spawning habitat in the Detroit River, complementing an existing spawning bed just offshore of Belle Isle.

Very impressive the skyline of Detroit on one side and from the Canadian shore on the other.

Translated from English - The James Scott Memorial Fountain is a monument in Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert and sculptor Herbert Adams, the fountain was completed in 1925 at a cost of $500,000. Unfortunately, it is currently not accessible due to renovation work.

This riverfront park draws more than three million walkers, bikers and picnickers every year. It's filled with green spaces and makes a great link for visiting businesses along Detroit's waterfront, or a relaxed, traffic-free ride to access Belle Island.

The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Trail coincides with the first 6 miles of the Iron Belle Trail, which provides a pedestrian- and bike-friendly route around the entire island.

This carefully restored lagoon is home not only to the herons that give it its name, but also turtles, a variety of fish, and lots of other birds and wildlife.

You'll have to hop off your bike to really enjoy this little park, which was once known as Windmill Point. The thirty-foot stone windmill was replaced with a lighthouse that went into operation in 1838. There was once a hospital here, too, but it was demolished when most historical buildings were moved away from here, leaving only the lighthouse remaining.
