Boulder Butte stands at 7,355 feet above sea level east of Lake Chelan and Stehekin in the heart of the North Cascades. This remote-feeling peak is a great challenge and an excellent adventure if in Stehekin. From the top you get panoramic views that you will most likely enjoy in solitude.

Purple Pass is a high mountain pass east of Lake Chelan and Stehekin. Although the climb up to the pass is strenuous - ascending many, many switchbacks - you get great views of the lake, and in the summer there is an abundance of wildflowers lining the trail. From Purple Pass you can either summit Boulder Butte or continue to Juanita Lake, which has campsites near a small lake.

If the tiny Purple Point Campground at the north side of Stehekin is already full, there is lots of room in this idyllic forested area. It can get a little crowded during Pacific Crest Trail hiker season which is roughly mid August through mid September.

This short loop trail offers a great view over Stehekin and Lake Chelan. Take a seat at the wooden bench to take in this unique landscape at the fullest. Along the loop you will find two wooden bridges and a small hidden waterfall. Enjoy!

Nestled deep into the North Cascades National Park lies the tiny town of Stehekin. It is less than 100 miles from the Canadian border and only accessible by foot, boat or seaplane. It is eleven miles from the Pacific Crest Trail on a dirt road. Two shuttle companies run at least four times a day to get you here. Most hikers send their final resupply package to Stehekin. The small town has a friendly post office, an excellent restaurant, a small store, hotel, campground and a laundromat with showers. You should definitely stop at the bakery outside of town and get some delicious cinnamon rolls – my personal favorite. The shuttle stops there, too.

The area is very highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the stunning views of the crystal-clear lake and the variety of trails that wind through forests and up to panoramic viewpoints.
Absolutely. The Echo Ridge trail system is a favorite for families, offering several easy loops with spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. For a very gentle and accessible option, the Chelan Riverwalk Park provides a lovely 1-mile stroll along the river.
Many trails in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest surrounding Lake Chelan are dog-friendly, but they must be kept on a leash. However, dogs are generally not permitted on trails within the North Cascades National Park sections. Always check the specific regulations for the trail you plan to hike.
Late spring through fall is the ideal time for hiking. Spring offers beautiful wildflower displays, especially in May and June. Summer provides warm, sunny weather perfect for combining a hike with a swim. In the fall, you can see the spectacular golden larches on higher-elevation trails.
Yes, the region offers several strenuous climbs. The Boulder Butte via the Purple Creek Trail is a difficult hike with significant elevation gain, rewarding you with incredible views from the Stephan Mather Wilderness Area.
The community of Stehekin and the trailheads in the upper Lake Chelan area, such as the Chelan Lakeshore Trail, are not accessible by road. You will need to take a ferry, like the Lady of the Lake, or a floatplane from the town of Chelan to reach them. This adds to the sense of adventure and seclusion.
The Imus Creek Loop – North Cascades is a perfect choice. It's a short, 1-mile (1.7 km) trail that can be completed in about 30 minutes, offering a quick and scenic taste of the North Cascades.
While the immediate Lake Chelan area is more known for its lake views and mountain vistas, trails in the broader North Cascades National Park and nearby wilderness areas feature waterfalls, especially during the spring snowmelt. Exploring trails that follow creeks up into the mountains will increase your chances of finding them.
Be sure to bring plenty of water, as many trails are exposed and can be hot in the summer. Also pack sun protection (hat, sunscreen), sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, snacks, and a map. Even on short hikes, it's wise to be prepared for changing weather conditions.
Most major trailheads, like those for Chelan Butte and at Echo Ridge, have designated parking areas. However, they can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays. For trails starting in Stehekin, you will park your car in Chelan or Fields Point Landing before boarding the ferry.
The Beebe Springs Wildlife Area, located where the Chelan River meets the Columbia River, is an excellent spot for birdwatching in its riparian habitats. On mountain trails, you might encounter deer, marmots, and various bird species. Always keep a safe distance and never feed wildlife.
