From the trailhead sign: The Forest Cathedral Natural Area contains one of the largest old growth forests of white pine and eastern hemlock in Pennsylvania. Many of these magnificent pine and hemlock trees now exceed three feet in diameter and approach 200 feet in height. Trees of this size are often over 300 years of age; dating to the era of William Penn, the first Governor of "Penn's Woods", and are often referred to as "William Penn Trees". It is perhaps fitting that this forest remains in the midst of an area which saw the greatest logging boom in the history of the Commonwealth - the period of the late 1800s, when thousands of acres of old growth forests were cut for the shipbuilding and constructions industries. The Forest Cathedral is registered as a National Natural Landmark and has been set aside for protection as a State Park Natural Area.

You can expect to hike through both old-growth and secondary forests, with many routes following stream valleys and featuring impressive rock formations. Most trails are rated as moderate, making them suitable for hikers with some experience.

Yes, there are several easier hikes suitable for families. While many trails involve hills, you can find gentler paths. For example, the interpretive trail at Hearts Content Recreation Area offers a walk through an old-growth forest on relatively flat terrain. The trails around Buzzard Swamp Wildlife Management Area are also a good option for easier walks with opportunities for birdwatching.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails?

Most trails in the Allegheny National Forest, which covers much of Forest County, are dog-friendly. Dogs must be kept on a leash and under your control at all times. It's always a good practice to check specific regulations for recreation areas or state parks like Cook Forest before you go.

What do other hikers think of the trails in Forest County?

The region is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.8 stars. Hikers often praise the pristine, quiet woodlands, the impressive rock formations found on certain trails, and the beautiful scenery within the Allegheny National Forest.

Are there any long-distance or challenging hikes available?

For those seeking a challenge, a 96-mile section of the North Country National Scenic Trail runs through the Allegheny National Forest, offering excellent opportunities for backpacking and long-distance hiking. For a demanding day hike, consider the Hiking loop from Corsica, which involves significant elevation gain over its 5-mile course.

Where can I find hikes with scenic overlooks?

Many trails in the region offer rewarding views from the tops of the rugged hills. For a route known for its scenery, try the Cook Forest State Park loop from Cook Forest State Park. Additionally, driving the Longhouse National Scenic Byway near the Allegheny Reservoir provides breathtaking roadside vistas of the area.

Yes, many of the popular trails are loops, allowing you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A great example is the Clear Creek State Park loop from Warsaw, a moderate 4.7-mile circular route that explores the park's beautiful woodland scenery.

Can I go hiking in Forest County during the winter?

Winter hiking is possible, but you should be prepared for cold, snowy, and icy conditions. Trails will not be cleared, so proper winter gear like waterproof boots, layers, and traction devices (microspikes) is essential. Stick to familiar or well-marked trails, as snow can obscure the path. The shorter days also mean you should start your hike early.

Are there any trails with waterfalls?

While the region is known for its beautiful streams and rivers like the Allegheny and Clarion, significant waterfalls are not a primary feature of most marked hiking trails in Forest County. Hikes often follow stream valleys, such as Minister Creek, offering lovely water views and cascades, but not large, distinct waterfalls.

Where can I find a good map for hiking in Forest County?

All routes on komoot come with a detailed map you can use for navigation directly on your phone, even offline. For broader planning, the Allegheny National Forest visitor centers offer detailed paper maps of the trail systems. You can also find useful information in the official Forest County Visitor Guide.

Are there opportunities for camping near the hiking trails?

Yes, camping is a popular activity. The Allegheny National Forest has numerous designated campgrounds, such as those near Minister Creek and Hearts Content. Dispersed camping is also permitted in many parts of the national forest for backpackers. Nearby state parks, like Cook Forest and Clear Creek, also offer excellent camping facilities.
