A nice place to park, I have yet to be inside the building, but it has picnic tables around it and a big parking lot.

This park has some amazing looking paddling with the bluffs all around it. I want to get back, maybe with a group and paddle here.

It's a bit of a scramble to get to the top of Reed's Peak but it's one of the few named promontories in Perrot State Park that few visit.

From this vantage point, it is possible to see Sugar Loaf Bluff in Winona upstream and on the opposite bank of the Mississippi River.

Yes, the area is great for families. Most trails are rated as easy. For a gentle walk with rewarding scenery, consider the King's Bluff Overlook β Great River Bluffs State Park trail. It's a relatively flat 2.5-mile (4 km) route leading to impressive views of the Mississippi River valley.
Dogs are generally welcome in Wisconsin's state parks and on state trails, but they must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet at all times. They are typically not allowed in buildings, picnic areas, or on beaches. For specific regulations, especially within the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, it's best to check the official park websites before you go.
The Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge is a premier destination for birding, as it's located within the Mississippi Flyway. The flat trails through wetlands and forests provide excellent opportunities to see waterfowl like tundra swans and pelicans, as well as bald eagles and various songbirds. The observation deck near the visitor center is a local favorite for spotting wildlife.
The geology of the Driftless Area in Trempealeau County, with its porous sandstone bluffs, means that significant waterfalls are not a common feature on the hiking trails. The hikes here are primarily known for their stunning bluff-top views and serene river valley paths rather than waterfalls.
For panoramic views, the bluff trails in Perrot State Park are unmatched. A great option is the Perrot Ridge β Reed's Peak loop from Trempealeau. This route involves a climb but rewards you with spectacular vistas over the Mississippi River. Another excellent choice is the trail to Sugar Loaf Bluff β Winona for a distinct perspective of the surrounding landscape.
The terrain varies significantly. You'll find flat, easy paths along the river, like the Great River State Trail, which is built on a former railroad line. In contrast, parks like Perrot State Park feature trails with steep climbs, wooden staircases, and rocky sections that lead up to the bluff tops. Most trails are well-maintained dirt or crushed limestone paths.
Yes, many of the most popular hikes are loops, allowing you to experience a variety of scenery without backtracking. For a pleasant circular walk, try the Lake Winona loop from Winona, which offers a flat and scenic 3.6-mile (5.8 km) path. Many trails in Perrot State Park, such as the Brady's Bluff β Boat Launch loop from Perrot State Park, are also designed as loops.
Yes, a vehicle admission sticker is required for entry into Wisconsin State Parks like Perrot State Park. These can be purchased online or at the park entrance. The Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, generally offers free admission and parking. For the most current fee information, please check the Perrot State Park and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge official websites.
The diverse habitats of Trempealeau County support a rich variety of wildlife. In the wetlands and river bottoms of the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, look for bald eagles, pelicans, tundra swans, and shorebirds. In the wooded bluffs of Perrot State Park, you're likely to encounter white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, chipmunks, and numerous songbirds.
Winter hiking is a great way to experience the stark beauty of the Driftless Area. Many trails remain open, offering a quieter experience. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear with good traction, such as microspikes, as trails can be icy, especially on the steep bluff sections. Snowshoeing is also a popular activity on many of the park trails after a fresh snowfall.
Trempealeau County offers a good mix, but the vast majority of trails are considered easy. There are many flat, gentle paths like those in the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge. The main challenge comes from the bluff trails in Perrot State Park, which involve significant elevation gain over short distances. Only one route in the area is rated as moderate, with the rest being easy.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community. Hikers frequently praise the stunning, panoramic views from the top of the bluffs and the well-maintained trail systems. The unique landscape of the Driftless Area, with its combination of river valleys and steep hills, is often mentioned as a key highlight.
