This is a gorgeous mountain lake nestled beneath the Høgvagltindene group. With the pointy Kyrkja to the north and mighty Visbreatinden to the east, a walk along its shores provides superb Jotunheimen views. Slightly lower down the valley are Nedre Høgvagltjønnen and then Langvatnet.

Høgvaglen is where the trails for Kyrkja's South Ridge, Leirvassbu and the route to Olavsbu and Gjendebu meet. The ascent of Kyrkja is particularly spectacular, while the SignaTUR Omveien makes use of the trails between here and Olavsbu. The view across Øvre Høgvagltjønnen towards Austre Høgvagltindane is exceptional.

This part of Visdalen provides simply astonishing views towards the charismatic peaks of Tverrbytthornet and Kyrkja. Both of these peaks display defiant prominence from their parent massifs, rising to sharp peaks of over 6,500 feet (2,000 m) in height.

Right in the beating heart of Jotunheimen, Leirvatnet is a stunning mountain lake. The sight of Kyrkja reflected in its waters is a magical one. It's not far from here to the superbly appointed Leirvassbu, which was taken over by the DNT in 2023.

Leirvassbu is a mecca for mountain hiking adventures. This large cabin was previously privately owned before the DNT took it over in 2023. The facilities are excellent and the surroundings are epic.

Kyrkja is one of Jotunheimen's most iconic peaks and it's obvious why when seen from here. The standard way to its pointed summit is the South Ridge, a classic scramble. Leirvassbu, one of the largest DNT huts, is the ideal start point for an adventure to the summit.

A very nice hut and a good starting point for various day hikes. Easily accessible on foot, by car, or by public bus from Lom/Fossbergom.
