October 18, 2026, Rouge Hill GO Station

The GO Station Rouge Hill is located near the shore of Lake Ontario. For hikers and cyclists, the train station is a good starting point to head east or west on the "Waterfront Trail" – however, access to the Rouge River in the east as well as the bridge over the river there is closed due to construction work until 2027. On September 28, 2026, we used Rouge Hill GO Station as a starting point for a hike heading west, along the Highland Creek to Guildwood – a great experience. https://www.gotransit.com/en/find-a-station-or-stop/ro/station-details

The paved Waterfront Trail runs through East Point Park, after crossing the bridge over Highland Creek, in sections directly along the lakeshore. This provides a good view over Lake Ontario. Visit on September 28, 2026

The Lynde Shores Conservation Area is a conservation area that includes the Lynde Creek Marsh and Cranberry Marsh on Lake Ontario and was established in 1972. Due to its proximity to urban centers, the area receives many visitors throughout the year, including walkers, hikers, and bird lovers. Interestingly, feeding songbirds is permitted here - but only with plant seeds. On a part of the park grounds, extensive interventions are being carried out to restore a natural state. The vegetation has been completely removed from the area southwest of the parking lot, and the terrain has been modeled with two lakes. The fallow landscape leaves a peculiar impression; one can only hope that the project will be successful and visible by 2028. https://www.cloca.com/lynde-shores Visit on June 24, 2026

Access to Rouge Beach and the pedestrian bridge over the Rouge River on the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail will be closed from late fall 2025 until approximately spring 2027. As part of the Rouge Beach Improvements Project, the wetland within Rouge National Urban Park between Highway 401 and Lake Ontario will be enhanced, including the restoration of the Rouge marshland and the creation of a hiking trail connecting the southern portion of the wetland to the well-established portion north of Highway 401, the Mast Trail. Detour recommendations for the Waterfront Trail are posted on information signs and the Parks Canada website. https://www.pickering.ca/parks-recreation-culture/waterfront/#NoticeofRougeBeachandGreatLakesWaterfrontTrailClosure https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/on/rouge/securite-safety/bulletins/60b30b1b-ad37-4883-9eb7-4ee3bed86804 (Visited June 15, 2026)

The Waterfront Trail runs along Pickering Beach where you can enjoy sweeping views across Lake Ontario. Watch sailboats coming and going from Frenchman's Bay Marina and, on a clear day, look out for the Toronto skyline on the horizon. The sandy beach and waterfront park also make a great spot for a picnic or a quick dip in summer.
