A wooden bridge will keep your feet dry when you cross Cascade Canal. It is just around the corner of the iconic Pacific Crest Trail and a nice water source, too.

While you hike through black fields of lava rock that came out of Brown Mountain and stroll over the reddish trail, look up to see majestic Mount McLoughlin, the southernmost solitary volcano in Oregon. There are trails leading up to the summit, if you are ambitious.

This is where the Sevenmile Trail meets the PCT. If you have to get off the PCT, the trailhead is just two miles from here with good chances to get a ride.

In designated Wilderness areas, such as the Sky Lakes Wilderness, it's especially important to keep them leashed to protect wildlife and the natural environment. Always check specific trailhead regulations before you start.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the area?

Yes, the forest offers several options for families. For a unique and accessible walk, consider the Pinnacles Valley Trail – Crater Lake National Park. It's a short, relatively flat path that leads through a fascinating valley of volcanic spires, making it an interesting adventure for all ages.

For fantastic panoramic views without an extreme climb, the Tipsoo Peak Trail – Umpqua National Forest is an excellent choice. This moderate hike rewards you with sweeping vistas of the surrounding Cascade Range from the summit.

When is the best time of year to hike in Fremont-Winema National Forest?

The prime hiking season is typically from late spring to fall, usually June through October, when most trails are snow-free. Higher elevation routes, especially those in the Sky Lakes Wilderness, may hold snow until July. Autumn offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Winter transforms the forest into a destination for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Do I need a permit to hike in the forest?

For most day hikes, you do not need a permit. However, a self-issued wilderness permit is required for both day and overnight use in the Sky Lakes and Gearhart Mountain Wilderness areas; these are usually available for free at the trailhead. For parking, a Northwest Forest Pass or equivalent federal pass is often required at developed trailheads.
