Patagonia is a sweet little Arizona Trail access town. It's a mix of miners, ranchers, folks living off the land, birders and cyclists.

This section is the latest addition to the Arizona Trail and one of the largest additions to the Arizona Trail in recent history. It weaves through Temporal Gulch and has many switchbacks going up or down the mountain. There can be a lot of overgrowths during summertime and due to wildlife protection it is not allowed to get rid of it. Wear long pants/sleeves and be prepared for route finding to be difficult.

The Arizona Trail leads directly through the small town of Patagonia. At Patagonia Market (open from 5am until 8pm!) and Red Mountains Foods you can refill your supplies. The only hotel in town is the Stage Stop Inn, which offers a discount for AZT hikers/bikers and has a hiker box available. If the hotel is fully booked, comfortable accommodation is available through AirBnB. Wifi and a great breakfast is available at the Gathering Grounds.

This stretch of the Arizona Trail connects the AZT to Harshaw Road and the nearby town of Patagonia, AZ. It's also a gorgeous flowing trail popular with MTB'rs in the area.

This is a really fun and technical section of the Arizona Trail with some water traversing near Gardner Canyon. You'll also pass the remains of Stetson's Dam.

To make hydraulic mining in the dry desert possible, around 1904 miners built a dam to store thousands of gallons of water. Today you see a long mound of earth and rock which once was a dam 10 feet high and 100 feet long. It was part of an eight and a half mile water system designed by James Stetson, an engineer of the Santa Rita Water & Mining Company.

Harshaw Road Trailhead is an access point to Passage 3 of the Arizona Trail with a large parking area. From here you walk about 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) on the road to the small town of Patagonia, the end point of Passage 3. Attention! There are quite a lot of cars and sometimes big trucks driving here.
