Directly across the street from the Tehachapi Museum is another local treasure that provides visitors with a true look back at early life in Tehachapi. The Errea House is the oldest house in the area, dating to the 1870s. The house, built in what is now called Old Town 4 miles west of the current city, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. About 1900, the house was moved on log rollers pulled by horses or mules to its present location. Its refurbished parlor, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and covered porch gives visitors a view of life in rural Tehachapi, 1900s–1930s. The old–fashioned garden, located on the north side of the building, is being restored to resemble the type of garden found by homes in Tehachapie in the 1900s to 1930s. The house is named after a Spanish Basque family who lived in the house for over 70 years. https://www.tehachapimuseum.org/errea-house

This delightful and informative museum stands in place of the original Tehachapi Depot that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Unfortunately the original building was destroyed in a fire in 2008, but this rebuilt replica is still listed in the register.

Calling this a bakery seems to be selling it a bit short, Of course there are plenty of baked goods on offer, but you'll also find soups, sandwiches, and much more. It's a great spot to fill up at after a long ride through the desert.

The Tehachapi Mountain Trail is a popular hiking trail close to the lovely town of Tehachapi. It leads into the Tehachapi Mountain Park with great views and tree cover that is a refresh during the hot summer months. The final section up to the summit, unfortunately, is not accessible since it is on private property.

This is a popular spot to hitch into the towns of Tehachapi (West) or Mojave (East). At the trailhead you will find a picnic bench with possible water cache, shaded spots and a trail register. Hitching into Mojave was not easy, though. I was trying my luck for more than 45 minutes at the junction of Oak Creek Road and Tehachapi Willow Springs Road. Although there is lots of traffic, nobody was stopping. UBER and lyft weren't available either.

Last water source for 16 miles south until Tylerhorse Canyon (unless the trail angels refill the water cache at the summit) and possibly north for 40 miles. The fantastic Tehachapi trail angel, in front of whose house we had parked the car a couple of weeks earlier and had dropped us off at the start of the section, picked us up here at the end. Perfect.
