Challenging last part of the scramble up to Round Top Summit, which has two rocky peaks separated by a deep rocky ravine requiring some sure-footedness. At this elevation snow can linger long into early summer, so poles, ax, and crampons may be needed, depending on snow and trail conditions.

Round Top affords stellar views across all surrounding peaks to Lake Tahoe, Capels Lake, and on clear days deep into the Sierra foothills in California and Nevada. Carson Pass is one of the highest pass roads that's kept open in winter, allowing relatively easy access to skin up to Winnemucca Lake at the foot of Round Top. From there the incline becomes steeper but still skinnable up to the summit plateau, from where the summit ridge can be approached in boots or crampons, depending how soft the snow is. The ski descent back to the lake and onward to the pass is pure bliss: https://www.komoot.de/highlight/153302 Make sure to obtain a SNOpark permit in Tahoe or Kirkwood before heading up the Carson Pass road.

A great choice is the hike to Lake Margaret, which is a moderate trail with relatively low elevation gain, making it more accessible for a family outing.

What are some good hikes with lakes near Kirkwood?

The Kirkwood region is renowned for its stunning alpine lakes. A fantastic option that takes you to two beautiful lakes is the Winnemucca Lake Trail – Round Top Lake Trail. This route provides classic Sierra Nevada scenery with dramatic peaks reflected in the water.

Are dogs allowed on the hiking trails around Kirkwood?

Most trails within the Eldorado National Forest are dog-friendly, but your dog must be under voice control or on a leash. However, regulations can be stricter in designated wilderness areas like the Mokelumne Wilderness. Always check specific trail regulations before you go and be prepared to pack out any waste.

What is the most challenging hike near Kirkwood?

For experienced hikers looking for a challenge, the Round Top loop is the most difficult option in this guide. It involves significant elevation gain and a long day on the trail as it circumnavigates the prominent peak, offering rewarding views for the effort.

Can I find any circular or loop hikes?

Yes, there are excellent loop hikes available. A popular circular route is the Winnemucca Lake and Carson Crest loop. This trail combines a visit to a scenic lake with expansive views from the Carson Crest, offering a varied hiking experience without backtracking.

What should I pack for a summer hike in Kirkwood?

For a summer hike in the high Sierras, it's crucial to prepare for changing conditions. Pack layered clothing, including a waterproof jacket, as afternoon thunderstorms are common. Also bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a map or GPS device, as cell service can be unreliable.

How is the parking for the main trailheads?

Parking is available at or near most major trailheads, such as the one for Carson Pass on Highway 88. However, these lots can fill up very quickly, especially on weekends during the summer. It's best to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot.
