Smelter Mountain is a great viewpoint with some decent history as well. From up here, you have a great view over Durango and the surrounding mountains. During the mining era, there was a huge smelter, known as the Durango Smelter, at the base of the mountain, that processed Coke, Lead, Copper, Silver, and Gold from mines all over La Plata County, San Juan County, and Southwestern Colorado. It operated between 1888 and 1930.

The network of trails on Raider Ridge is rocky, dusty, and usually fairly steep. Hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers frequent the ridge and this lookout, which peers over the city, Animas Mountain, and the Perins Peak Wildlife Area.

From here you can take the winding Spirit Trail south to make a fun loop through the lower (and flatter) region of the park, or follow the Ella Vita Trail north up toward Hogsback. The trailhead from here is a singletrack that winds around the outside of a residential area from the end of a cul-de-sac.

The trailhead is at the end of a cul-de-sac in a residential area. You should be able to park on the left side of Leyden Street near the trailhead as you drive in. From here the trails range from wide gravel roads to steep singletrack, and there are a vast variety of routes to explore right from town.
