The old estate came about as a successor to the Cistercian nuns after the town came into the hands of the electors in 1546 in the course of secularisation. From 1564 Joachim von Roebel and his descendants used the monastery complex as a manor. After several changes of ownership, in 1848 the Friedland dominion went to Count Heinrich August von Itzenplitz, later Minister of State (Minister of Commerce), who inherited it to his daughter Countess Luise. Their descendants (most recently Karl von Oppen (1901-1974) continued to manage the estate in the decades that followed until it was expropriated by the land reform in 1945. The estate complex included the Roebelsche house from the late 17th century, the baroque office building (manor house) from the first half of the 18th century and the Wilhelminian front building including stable barn and the property enclosure with park. Inside, the original room layout has largely been preserved to this day. In the GDR era, the manor house was used, among other things, as the administrative headquarters of the community council, and the coachman's apartment next to the stables and coach house was temporarily used as a youth club. The manor house has been empty since the early 1990s and several attempts by the municipality to sell the former manor complex for a sensible use concept have not been implemented. To save the manor house, a non-profit company called “Manor House of the Future Altfriedland gGmbH” was founded on September 25, 2021 by the descendants of Friedland’s wife. The gGmbH took over the manor house from the previous owner on the same day. The company is committed to ensuring that the manor house, along with the monastery church, the monastery ruins and the vicarage, is preserved as a historically grown cultural ensemble and given a new use.
