At the top of this trail is a pink pillbox that provides scenic views in real life, and some instagram worthy content. The pillbox provides some of the best views on this side of the island and being that it is west facing, is ideal at sunset.

Before attempting to hike along Mount Kaʻala Trail, please be aware that this might be one of the toughest hikes on the island. The hike includes almost 3,600 feet in altitude and there are many sections where you have to scramble over muddy boulders with the help of attached ropes (gloves might be useful). But if you're up for the challenge, you will love the views along your way, so get ready for a great adventure!

Puʻu O Hulu Trail is known by many people under its unofficial name 'Pink Pillbox Hike'. The last section of the trail, leading up the mountain of PuʻUʻOhulu Kai, includes multiple pillboxes (old military bunkers). One of them is painted pink to raise awareness for breast cancer and became the unofficial namesake of the trail.

Most trails in Nanakuli involve hiking on steep, rugged ridges with rocky terrain. The paths can be narrow and exposed, so proper hiking footwear with good grip is essential. Due to the heat on the west coast, it's best to start early to avoid the midday sun, as there is often little shade.
Yes, for a relaxed, family-friendly walk, consider the View of Ko Olina Lagoon – Koi Pond loop from Kīpuka Lawn. This is a mostly flat, 3.2-mile (5.1 km) paved path through the Ko Olina resort area, making it suitable for all ages and strollers.
For experienced and well-prepared hikers, the Mount Kaʻala Trail — Waianae Kai Forest Reserve, Oʻahu offers a significant challenge. This strenuous 6.8-mile (10.9 km) route ascends over 3,400 feet (1,038 m) to the highest peak on Oahu, requiring endurance and navigating difficult terrain.
Hiking with dogs in this area can be challenging. Many trails are located within Forest Reserves where dogs may be restricted or required to be on a leash. The terrain is also steep, rocky, and exposed to the sun, which can be tough on a dog's paws and lead to overheating. It's best to check specific trail regulations and consider the conditions before bringing your pet.
Yes, the ridges above Nanakuli feature several historic World War II bunkers, often called pillboxes. The most famous is the Maili Pillbox, also known as the 'Pink Pillbox', which is a popular destination for its history and panoramic views. These structures add a unique historical element to the hikes.
The hikes around Nanakuli are famous for their spectacular panoramic views. From the ridges, you'll see the deep Nanakuli Valley, the dramatic Waianae Mountain Range, and stunning vistas of the turquoise Pacific Ocean along the entire western coastline of Oahu.
For an easy and scenic coastal walk, the View of Ko Olina Lagoon loop from Laniwai – A Disney Spa is a great option. It's a short, paved path that follows the beautiful lagoons, perfect for a gentle stroll while enjoying the ocean breeze.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Reviewers frequently praise the rewarding and expansive ocean views from the ridge tops. The challenge of the steep but short ascents leading to incredible scenery is another commonly highlighted aspect.
Besides the trails themselves, several trailheads and parks are local favorites. The Puʻu O Hulu (Pink Pillbox) Trailhead is the starting point for one of the most popular hikes. For a longer coastal adventure, many people head to Kaʻena Point State Park, a remote and scenic area known for its rugged shoreline trails.
The western side of Oahu, where Nanakuli is located, is much drier than the eastern side. As a result, permanent waterfalls are not a feature of the local hiking trails. The hikes here are prized for their dramatic ridge lines and coastal views rather than waterfalls.
Parking can be limited, especially for popular trails like those leading to the pillboxes. It's often street parking in residential areas, so be sure to park respectfully and legally. For more remote trails like the Mt. Kaʻala Hiking Trail, be aware that break-ins can be a concern; it is highly recommended not to leave any valuables in your car.
