From the path you can see the so-called "bullet traps", part of a military shooting range. They were partly built at the end of the 19th century - i.e. before the First World War - and partly in the first half of the 20th century. During the Nazi era, German soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians were executed at this site. Courts had sentenced them to death as deserters, among other things. As the owner of this area, the Braunschweig Cultural Heritage Foundation has joined forces with the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation, the city of Braunschweig, the Braunschweig Peace Center, monument conservationists, historians and artists to preserve and design this place as a memorial site. The intention is to develop an overall concept for this site, taking into account both didactic and artistic aspects, which does justice to the memory of the victims and at the same time provides appropriate space for a critical analysis of recent history. https://www.braunschweig.de/kultur/erinnerungskultur/Gedenkstaette_Buchhorst.php https://www.kramerwf.de/gedenkstaetten/gedenkstaette-buchhorst-braunschweig

The paths are wet, but a detour to the ponds is worth it - the view over the water is truly idyllic.
