During WWI, Berkhamsted was used by troops to train for trench life on the continent. They would live in a nearby tented camp, stand parade on Kitchenerβs Field, and trained on Berkhamsted and Northchurch Commons. These were officers from the Inns of Court Officers Training Corp., otherwise known as The Devilβs Own. These officers dug 13 miles of trenches here in training for the real thing that they would shortly face opposite enemy lines. These days there is an information board here, a memorial, and of course the trenches.

Yes, dogs are widely welcomed on the Ashridge Estate, making it a great place to walk with your four-legged friend. The extensive network of footpaths through woodlands and open commons provides plenty of space. However, please keep dogs on a lead where livestock is grazing and be mindful of wildlife, such as the local deer population.
The Ashridge Estate offers several waymarked walks suitable for families and casual walkers starting from the Bridgewater Monument. For a specific route on komoot, the Bridgewater Monument β Bridgewater Monument loop from Little Gaddesden is a relatively short and easy walk through the estate's beautiful woodlands.
Ashridge is stunning year-round, but it's particularly famous for its spectacular carpets of bluebells in late spring. Autumn is also a magical time, as the beech woodlands turn brilliant shades of gold and orange. The fallow deer are also more active during the autumn rut, offering a chance for wildlife spotting.
Most of the popular trails in the Ashridge area are circular. The routes are designed to lead you through a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, chalk grasslands, and past historical landmarks, before returning you to your starting point. The Ashridge Estate CafΓ© β Ashridge House loop from Little Gaddesden is a great example of a moderate circular walk.
The nearest train stations are Tring and Berkhamsted, which have direct services from London Euston. From the stations, you would typically need to take a taxi or a local bus service to reach the main visitor centre at the Ashridge Estate, as it is several miles away.
The main car park is at the National Trust - Ashridge Estate visitor centre, near the Bridgewater Monument. This is a popular starting point for many waymarked trails. For walks around the northern part of the estate, the Ivinghoe Beacon Circular Walk Car Park is another excellent option, providing direct access to the Beacon and the surrounding hills.
The National Trust operates a popular cafΓ© at the Ashridge Estate visitor centre, which is a perfect start or end point for many walks. The nearby villages of Aldbury and Little Gaddesden also have traditional pubs that are often frequented by walkers for refreshments.
Ashridge is a haven for wildlife. You have a good chance of spotting fallow deer, especially in the early morning or evening. The area is also rich in birdlife, and the chalk downlands around Ivinghoe Beacon are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to rare butterflies and wildflowers.
For panoramic views, Ivinghoe Beacon is a must-visit. It's a prominent landmark offering spectacular vistas over the surrounding countryside. The Bridgewater Monument also provides breathtaking views from the top, and on a clear day, you can see for miles across the Chilterns.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, the Ashridge Boundary Trail is a 16-mile circular route that tours the entire estate. Additionally, the Ashridge House β View over Aldbury loop from Aldbury is a long and rewarding hike that takes in some of the best scenery the estate has to offer.
The hiking routes in this area are highly rated by the komoot community. Reviewers often praise the well-maintained paths, the stunning variety of scenery from dense woodlands to open chalk hills, and the abundance of historical landmarks to discover along the trails.
The National Trust has made efforts to improve accessibility. There are some designated 'easy-access' trails, particularly around the visitor centre, which are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. However, many of the paths in the wider estate involve uneven ground, slopes, and stiles, which would be challenging.
