The largest dam in Lower Saxony offers plenty of nature and stands as a significant structure in the region. However, it was already very empty at the beginning of October, which was truly alarming. Circling it by bike or on foot is possible and offers a lot of variety. There isn't much in the way of gastronomy, so if anything, I recommend bringing enough food and drink with you. Passenger boat services were already discontinued in 2025.

Attention: there are Hyalomma ticks in this area! Please check yourselves after your hike! We were in the Feigenbaumklippe/Mausefalle/Hexenküche/Kästeklippe area in October 2026 with two adults and two dogs and found a total of 7 Hyalomma ticks afterwards. If you find any, please do not throw them back into the grass for the next person to pick up, but kill them. A female can lay up to 15,000 eggs after a successful blood meal! https://parasitenportal.de/parasiten/zecken/hyalomma-zecke/

A great 360-degree panoramic view over the Harz and the beautiful Okertal await everyone up there.

A highlight! The lower section is also highly recommended. It's also used a lot by hikers, but this isn't a problem due to the increasing width along the way. The access paths to the west also allow you to get back to the start or the second section relatively quickly.

Just pause for a moment and listen to the Ilse.

Only from this spot can you get a beautiful view of the bridge. Unfortunately, there is too little water in the reservoir.

The reservoir supplies drinking water to the cities of Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, and Wolfsburg. The water is piped to the Lewerberg reservoir near Liebenburg, where drinking water from the Grane Dam also arrives. From there, a pipeline leads to the Thieder Lindenberg and further to the cities of Braunschweig and Wolfsburg. The water of the Ecker River is relatively acidic, with a pH of 4.6, due to the humic acid-rich moor streams. It is also low in nutrients and therefore well suited for drinking water treatment.[3] The dam is not used for fishing, as most fish cannot tolerate the low pH.[5] Below the dam, the water is almost neutral.
