Due to the flood in August 2002, the dam had to withstand its first trial.

The castle was probably built in the 12th or early 13th century and was owned by the Bishopric of Passau from the 13th century. In the following centuries, it changed owners several times and was at times a Brandenburg enclave in Austria. After damage during the Thirty Years' War, the castle lost its importance and fell into disrepair.
