Basel Town Hall (Rathaus Basel)

Highlight • Monument

Town Hall, Basel
The town hall is a representative building in the Swiss city of Basel. The building, located directly on Basel's market square, stands out for its red sandstone and striking tower. The political center of Basel was established on the same site in 1290, and it still represents this in its institutional form to this day.

Basel Paper Mill Museum, Basel
The Basel Paper Mill, also known as the Swiss Museum of Paper, Writing and Printing, is a museum in the Swiss city of Basel and is mainly dedicated to paper production, the art of printing, bookbinding and writing in general.
The main building of today's paper museum was originally a grain mill that belonged to the Klingental monastery until 1428. In 1453 it was converted into a paper mill by Anton Gallizian. The era of the Gallizian paper printing family ended in 1521 as a result of a political upheaval. The mill was then further expanded, mainly by the Thüring (Düring) family. In 1778, the bookseller and publisher Johann Christoph Imhof-Burckhardt took over the mill. In 1788 he replaced the manufacturing part located on the canal with a two-story building with a three-story roof structure. In 1850, the Hugo brothers' tobacco factory moved into the building. From 1957 it served as a storage room until the building was restored and the museum was set up in 1980.
In 2011 the buildings were extensively renovated and the museum expanded. The exhibition was completely revised and more clearly structured.
Today the main building (Gallizian Mill) houses the actual museum with all the workshops and an event room. The neighboring Stegreif Mill houses a café and the entrance ticket office. The Rych Mill, located south of the Gallizian Mill, houses the shop and the museum workshops. A fourdrinier paper machine from 1964 can also be viewed there.
