Ruins of Neideck Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle ruins Neideck is one of the landmarks of Franconian Switzerland. She was at risk of falling for a long time and was unable to enter. Since 2008 it's different. Today you can even climb the main tower and enjoy the already great panorama from underneath. Quite apart from that, this is just a nice place. There is a lot to discover, the view is great and in good weather it makes sense to take a little break and let the sun shine on your fur.

Atzelsberg Castle

Well worth a visit in any case. Well maintained. With over 300 years of history. Rebuilt in its current form from 1705 after being destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In 1961 the castle was bought by the city of Erlangen and extensively renovated. It was sold privately in 2004 to save money, but with the condition that it be opened to the public. The new owner completely renovated the castle and the complex by 2013.

The fortified church with its thick walls and pointed towers is really impressive. The reason for the establishment in the 15th century were previous raids by the Nuremberg troops. Effeltrich has the best preserved fortified church in Upper Franconia. In the immediate vicinity of the church is the mighty dancing linden tree with its sweeping canopy of leaves. Definitely worth seeing!

The margravial palace, 65 meters wide and 21 meters high, with its palace garden, orangery, and Concordienkirche, was built from 1700 onwards in Erlangen as the first self-contained Baroque ensemble in Franconia, commissioned by Georg Wilhelm, Hereditary Prince of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and later Margrave of Bayreuth. Antonio della Porta and Jaques Bourdin de la Fond adopted the Baroque style under the influence of French Classicism. In 1703, Georg Wilhelm's father, Margrave Christian Ernst, bought the still unfinished palace to gift it to his third wife, Elisabeth Sophie. After Christian Ernst's death in 1712, it served as a widow's residence for Elisabeth Sophie, then for Sophia of Saxe-Weissenfels. In 1764, the widowed Margravine Sophie Caroline Marie moved into Erlangen Palace and lived there with her court of around 40 people for almost 50 years. She received numerous guests at the palace, including King Frederick William of Prussia twice. Erlangen society met at the palace: above all the professors, who presented their latest scientific findings to Sophie. In her will, the Margravine bequeathed the palace with its outbuildings to the university. Since 1945, it has served exclusively for the university administration.

Behind the castle, a 280-meter-wide and 550-meter-long castle garden was created with an orangery (completed in 1706), Concordia Church (1706; now the Geological Institute), Huguenot fountain, equestrian statue and the now-defunct Hedge Theatre. The first self-contained, baroque courtly building ensemble in Franconia was created here. (Wikipedia)

Before 1180, Egloffstein Castle can be identified as the ancestral home of the Lords of Egloffstein. However, the first documented mentions only come from the years 1180 and 1184, in which Salmann was called “Henricus de Hegelofuesten” or “Heinricus de Agilulfi lapide” (from Latin lapide, stone). In 1509 the castle became a fiefdom of the bishops of Bamberg, but it remained in the possession of the von Egloffstein family to this day. In 1525 the town of Egloffstein was burned down in the Peasants' War, and in 1561 the Reformation gained a foothold in Egloffstein. The place was burned down twice during the Thirty Years' War. He came to Bavaria in the course of secularization in Bavaria. The associated town of Bieberbach was temporarily held by Hans von Streitberg in the second half of the 16th century.[4][5] 20th and 21st centuries In 1956 the title of climatic health resort was awarded and three years later Egloffstein was declared a market town.
