February 19, 2024, Haus Ruhr

Haus Ruhr is a listed building ensemble and a former moated castle in Schwerte-Wandhofen. The house was originally built in 1455 by Jan von Boyle zu Wetter for his son-in-law from the noble family of Neheim. Over the centuries, the house has experienced several changes of ownership and the complex had to be primarily geared towards defense due to the numerous wars. The buildings that stand today date from the 17th and 19th centuries. In the 1970s, Haus Ruhr served as a children's and youth home before it was purchased by Jürgen Störr in 1987 and renovated between 1988 and 1995 for the Ruhr Academy's study program. A special feature on the site is one of the oldest horse chestnut trees in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is over 200 years old and is also known as the "mother of chestnuts". According to tradition, Count von Nesselrode, an envoy of Frederick the Great, brought the chestnut tree back from a mission in Persia and lost it at Haus Ruhr, which led to the first chestnut tree on native soil. The estate's landscape garden was laid out in the 19th century based on the English model. Haus Ruhr is not only an architectural treasure, but also a place of art and creativity. The Ruhr Academy, a private institute for design, art and media, was founded there by Jürgen Störr and his wife Roswitha in the 1980s. The institute places great value on close supervision of students in an inspiring environment and offers training that goes beyond pure craftsmanship.
